1. This is very basic. Turn off the lights if necessary. Sometimes, we forget to put out the lights when we get out of the room. See to it that you do.

2. Use fluorescent lights instead of incandescent light bulbs. Not only you can save energy from using them but they don't give off heat as much as light bulbs although you can find some incandescent light bulbs that can help in saving energy. Make sure you choose one that is not yellow. Choose a white light incandescent bulb.

3. When you're not using your appliances like your TV, don't put it on "stand-by". Turn it off completely.

4. When using your microwave oven, put the food as close as possible to the edge of the rotating tray because the microwaves interact at a more energetic level on the edges than they do in the center of the tray.

5. If you are planning to cook frozen dressed chicken, for example, thaw it minutes before cooking. This is to avoid using water to defrost the ice. Saving water means you also save a lot of energy in using your electric water tank.

6. Do not place hot food inside the fridge. Make sure you let it cool down before placing it inside.

7. Plan carefully your ironing or make sure that you schedule your ironing. It is best to iron all the clothes in one sitting.

8. If you are choosing a clothes washer, be sure to select a model that is front-loading since it uses half the energy and 40% less water as compared to top-loading models.

9. When cooking small meals, it's best to use an oven toaster rather than a conventional oven. But of course, cooking a turkey should be done in an oven.

10. If you have an older fridge, you should try to test its magnets on the door of the fridge. Close the door on a sheet of paper. Then, pull the paper out and if it slides out very easily, the magnetic seal must be replaced.

11. Talking about your refrigerator, don't open and close the ref as frequently as you would and don't leave the fridge door open for a long time.

12. Create an airlock by enclosing your front or rear porch. This way, it will keep the warm air inside your house and you don't have to use your heater more often than you do.

13. It's not enough to put everything on the fridge at any way you can. You have to see to it that everything is well-organized so that it will allow air to easily flow around.

14. Make sure that you clean your light bulbs periodically. Dirty light bulbs will force them to emit more light thus creating more energy and that means wasting a lot of money.

There are still many things that anyone can think of to save money on energy.
