Prada History

Prada is an Italian fashion company which is also known as a label and fashion house which has retail outlets around the world, it is considered one of the most influential clothes designers in the fashion industry. The product range of Prada features handbags, bags, purses, wallets, fashion clothing, shoes, sneakers, sunglasses, leather accessories, perfumes, suitcases, trunks,  and now even Cell phone in collaboration with LG.

The company was known as Prada Brothers and was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada in Milan who use to make handbags, shoes, suitcases & trunks made from walrus skin. He use to have two outlets in Milan and had clients across the US and Europe. As the prada suitcases were made from heavy walrus skin it was impractical to ship the suitcase by air travel, therefore Prada started concentrating on designing lighter leather handbags, leather accessories which were waterproof, garments made of waterproof fabric. They added items made of high quality crystals; tortoise shell and wood which were very durable.

The company started to decline in 1970's, it was in 1978 when Miuccia Prada took over the company who had a doctorate in political science. She inherited the leather goods business from her family and she had a sense for fashion which was unmistakable. The prada label was only a financially struggling leather good manufacturer who had stiff competition with fashion labels like Gucci and others. Miuccia started turning things around and drove the House of Prada from expansion to couture. She started by making backpacks bags made from Pocone which is a waterproof nylon and with some crunchy polyester, parachute nylon and other synthetic fabrics.

In 1985 classic Prada handbag was unveiled which was simple, sleek, black stylish nylon bag which became an overnight sensation. This bag became popular because it was highly functional, sturdy, and fashionably practical. In 1989 Prada launched the "prêt-a-porter collection" of clothing which were elegant, simple, made from luxurious fabric in basic colors which sky rocket the Prada popularity and sale. In the same year Prada launched the Prada line of footwear for women. Miuccia Prada took her grandfather's struggling leather goods business and created a true million dollar empire which has now stores around the world.

Prada was the leading force in fashion in 1990's, its signature look was the high quality, smart looks, sophisticated products made from luxury fabric with simple styles mostly in brown, gray, black, cream and green colors. The clothing's were simply sexy without revealing too much skin they had simple restructured shapes, knee length skirts, skinny belts had become the currency of success in the mid 90's. Her clothes are not exactly fashionable. There is no defining accent, just a grouping of desirable useful things in exquisite fabrics. . While the accessories included were the leather belts, series of handbags, and high heels.                                                                                                                  

Prada is credited with many innovations in fabric and design from mirror fragments to beaded latex, experimenting with unique blends of fabrics without disturbing the caliber of the brand. Prada launched the Miu Miu line which targeted the young consumers and was affordable. This collection had the flowing shapes, colors and prints with a high end vintage look which set it a part from other collection of Prada, it was followed up by Prada Sport label 'Linea Rossa' which won the international award for accessories in 1993. Also followed by a line of Mens wear and lingerie collection.

In 1998 Prada opened its first menswear shop in Los angeles along with Miu Miu boutiques in Manhattan and Lasvegas. Prada is now a million dollar concern owing outlets in almost every country across the globe. Prada shoes for men and women are very popular in celebrities like Uma Thurman, Cameron Diaz and fashion enthusiasts alike. The ladies handbags are widely popular specially the Prada Triangle which is a status symbol in North America and Europe.

Prada has recently designed a mobile phone with LG which is known as the Prada Phone by LG KE850. This phone will be available at selected prada outlet across the UK, Germany and other countries.
