How to Prank Librarians

Library Pranks and Ideas

If you have ever met a librarian, you'll probably notice that 99% of them are major type A's. They like papers stacked in neat rows. They push in chairs. They speak in quiet voices. (The FEW exceptions to this rule are children and teen services librarians.) They are also highly fun to prank.

Read below as to how you to can prank your favorite(or not quite so favorite) librarian.

How to Prank Librarians

  • Ask for the definition of a word. When they are unable to locate it and ask for possible context or optional spellings, say you do not know. After they have exhausted all options and even looked in every available dictionary and asked where you heard the word used, state that you heard it in a dream... as if this is perfectly normal.

Go to the reference desk and ask for "a book." Refuse to elaborate.

While they are away from the desk searching for your items, move everything within arms reach 1/2" to the left

Make up titles to books. Insist that you saw them on national best sellers lists.

Whenever they start talking, sshhhh them. HELLO!!! Don't they know that it's a library?

Tell the reference librarian to "hold on" while you take an important call on your cell phone. Proceed to talk LOUDLY about a friend's outfit/recent breakup/vacation/etc. Glare at the librarian if they have the audacity to interrupt.

Pull a chair in front of the desk and start drawing. Every once in awhile look up, squint, make hmmm or tsk tsk sounds. Refuse to allow them to see what it is. After several minutes, quietly present them with a stick figure drawing as if it is a Van Gough.

Ask for recommended book suggestions. Refuse every one of them.

Pretend to talk on a cell phone or watch pod casts during library programs.

Leave computer print outs at the Media Desk. Return a week later demanding to know what they did with your important papers.

Order a pizza. Have it delivered to the quiet room. Make loud noises of delight with each bite.

Demand to know why you should return The Cat in the Hat! After all, it might take you more than the three weeks allowed to read it. Refuse to hear about those new fangled renewing procedures.

Call asking for your horoscope and lucky numbers every day.

Demand they read you today's news paper from cover to cover.

File comment forms when the library does not yet have a book in stock that has yet to be published.

Complain that the toilet flushes too loud.

Ask how many boxes of pudding it would take to fill up your swimming pool for a school's out party.

Ask who said a famous quote. After they find the information and a quoted source, insist they are wrong.

Tell your whole life story with as many details as possible. Lead a boring life (aside from pulling pranks on librarians of course)? No worries! Make something up.

Leave cryptic messages on the magnetic board in the Children's area. (See picture below of one such message left by two teens who kept coming and changing their message when we walked away from the desk, then hiding while waiting for us to find their message.)

Tea Party in the Head Librarian's Office

April Fool's Day 2011

Puppet Tea Party

Our head children's librarian may be type A, but she does appreciate a good prank. The night before April Fool's, I snuck back in the library after hours and set up my prank in her office. She walked in the next morning to a Puppet Tea Party. Since everything's in the details, our Mortimer puppet even had a bottle of Pepto Bismol to go along with his unusual snack and the Giraffe was wearing red boots similar to The Boss Lady's favorite red cowgirl boots.

Needless to say, the boss's office got a lot of traffic as everyone had to come and see while trying to guess who did it. mwah ha ha

Watch Where You Sit

You'll never want to sit in another library chair again....

It's amazing how often librarians find "surprises" in library chairs. (Sadly, half the time it's not even in the children's area.) However after being found, the chairs must be thoroughly cleaned by maintenance. For a super easy library prank, simply put a note on a librarians chair asking maintenance to clean....

Many children's areas have magnetic boards with letters for kids to use. Leave cryptic messages. "Hide" and wait for reactions.

National Librarian's Day

Celebrate National Librarian's Day each year on April 16th by giving your favorite librarian a small present... with an ornery grin the whole time. Don't say a single word, just back away keeping eye contact and not blinking. She'll be too paranoid to enjoy even the most fabulous of gifts. hehehe

Will Work for Cupcakes

I've always wanted to hang this from the children's desk....

Library Prankster's Trick

Telephone in questions. On the phone, librarians are less likely to just show you resources and expect you to find them on your own. Check out how Crank Yankers pranked a local librarian....

Rappelling Down the Library Walls

Raining outside? Too hot to exercise? Need to practice getting down a cliff in a controlled environment but can't afford the rappelling wall at the local gym?

No worries! Use the rail guards at your local library. After all, what else are they there for???

Still not enough pranks for you to perform on your poor librarians? Well, of course there's always the classic Pacman in the library prank....

Oh so funny! I would never have tried to prank the librarian -- guess I was afraid? :)

Funny lens. I used to know a couple of librarians that would have been good sports.

Even though my mom was a librarian, she would have laughed at these. What she would not have appreciated were the people who treated the ones who came to study with disrespect.

I got a lot of chuckles out of this one.

Commenting after reading Bossy Pants's comment on her security word. And mine is... BIRDGEEK!

I keep wishing that someone would prank us by breaking into our library and absconding with our 30 year old carpet. So far, no takers. It's getting to the point that I am tempted to do it myself!

Brought back some fond memories of middle-school antics played on a librarian whose favorite saying was, inexplicably, "don't touch the books!" Go figure.

One of my dearest friends is a librarian. I'll have to quiz her on what pranks have been visited upon her! By the way -- the security word required before I can post my comment requires a definition, please: sniffwoot.
