Forgiveness and Reconciliation

Prayers for my enemies is about forgiveness and reconciliation. It is about forgiving all those (the Almighty knows how numerous they are!) who have harmed me, and about reconciling myself with them in spirit if not in real life because I had never been and cannot be in close contact with some of them.

I forgive my enemies although they have harmed me both materially and morally because they were weak persons, not knowing what they were doing, believing that the ultimate goal in life is material wealth, that wealth sublimates into happiness. I forgive them because through their wrongdoings they helped me to solidify my character and to differentiate between what is important and what is not in life, between the good methods of achieving good on Earth and the wrong ones.

I forgive my enemies because they are not my enemies. I do not have enemies.

The Bandwagon

Until 1995, I was a very successful architect and property developer in Mauritius. Given my modest origin (see Why I support the Weak) achieving this without having recourse to corruption was very difficult, and on several occasions I lost an important architectural commission after refusing to grease a fat palm. However, honesty pays and I was successful.

As from 1995, a group of opportunists--a big boss, a minister, a bookmaker, a money-changer, a hotel promoter, an accountant and an architect, followed by an important retinue--jumped on a bandwagon to entrap me, and I was too naïve at that time to realize what was being planned. The result was that between 1995 and 1998 I lost the equivalent of more than $500,000 (about Rs10 million at that time, a fortune in Mauritius) plus all the revenue that I would have earned over the following years, equivalent to much more than the lost sum (given that money breeds money).

I had to shelve my projects to help create a better world for many years, concentrating on damage control instead, but the damage was terrible, materially, family-wise, and socially.

The story will be the object of several lenses. This lens is about those who harmed me and my prayers for them.

The Wisdom of Forgiveness

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Mahatma Gandhi

The hatred you're carrying is a live coal in your heart - far more damaging to yourself than to them. Lawana Blackwell, The Dowry of Miss Lydia Clark

Prayers for my enemies: Prayer for the bookmaker

Almighty, forgive him for he knew not what he was doing

Dear Almighty,

After the bookmaker and his associates set me up the bookmaker's business has expanded considerably. He has invested in large real estate projects, casinos, transportation of tourists, import of electronic equipment, etc. Almighty, please ensure that he never deviates from his successful trajectory.

Almighty, please also keep the bookmaker in good health. Let his blood flow in his arteries as it did when he was a young man; let him continue to have the energy to play tennis on Sundays. In this way diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, so preponderant as a cause of death in Mauritius, will never strike him.

Please also instill in him (and the others) the art of giving. Let him also learn peacefulness through music.

There are those who give little of the much which
they have--and they give for recognition and their
hidden desire makes their gifts unwholesome.
And there are those who have little and give it all.
These are the believers in life and the bounty of
Life, and their coffer is never empty.
There are those who give with joy, and that joy is
Their reward.

Prayers for my enemies: Prayer for the money-changer

Almighty, forgive him for he knew not what he was doing

Dear Almighty,

The money-changer is making billions (in rupees, but still equivalent to millions of dollars) so I won't request you to help him accumulate more wealth, Almighty. Instead, I'll pray for his good health.

He has a very bad sinusitis that causes a persistent migraine, forcing him to absent himself often from office. He went to Switzerland for surgery but according to my information his sinusitis is getting bad again after some initial relief.

Almighty, please prevent the money-changer's sinusitis from deteriorating. Let him have the will to practise hatha yoga which, I'm certain, would bear a marvelous effect on his health.

Dirty is all around us. It comes mainly from illegal drugs. Those who launder it are Bankers, lawyers, accountants and money managers all over the world. This book is shows how money gained from crime is made to appear like legal currency and become legal currency.

A must for all who are interested to know why the world is more and more controlled by criminals.

Prayers for my enemies: Prayer for the minister

Almighty, forgive him for he knew not what he was doing

Dear Almighty,

To be honest, Almighty, it took me time to forgive the minister due to his arrogant, tortuous and violent personality (once he assaulted a policeman, and another time, in Parliament, he kicked another MP in the shin in the middle of a session), to the harm he has caused to numerous people, and to all the bribes he has taken.

Let me pray that he at last understands the true nature of his personality, that he reflects on it and then turns into a civilized person.

Prayers for my enemies: Prayer for the hotel promoter

Almighty, forgive him for he knew not what he was doing

Dear Almighty,

Since the coup against me, the hotel promoter has built several 4-star hotels and buildings around the island. The cash flow of his companies remains negative, however, as it has always been, and his banks are constantly threatening to put drag the companies into receivership.
Almighty, please protect the hotel promoter's companies from bankruptcy and show him the path of integrity, show him that it is possible to flourish without having recourse to corruption.

Prayers for my enemies: Beautiful Mauritius would be more beautiful with less hate around

Same for the world

Mauritius is a very beautiful country. However, probably for historical reasons (most people are descendants of either coolies or slaves) a mentality of survival of the fittest spoils the scenery. Dishonesty prevails in all spheres and corruption galloping. Mark Twain must be rolling in his grave...

Beach, Cap Malheureux, Mauritius

Beach, Cap Malheureux, Mauritius

Almighty, help Mauritius recover its true image, the image of Heaven, by helping all those who have harmed me find the right path. As they are so numerous, coming from all spheres (many of them I have not mentioned, either because they were petty followers, or because in their present situation they could still harm me even after I have forgiven them), I have no doubt that if all of them change, Mauritius would change.

Please also make the whole world a better place by helping those around the world who harm their neighbors, and protect the neighbors who are being harmed.

Prayers for my enemies: Prayer for the Big Boss

Almighty, forgive him for he knew not what he was doing

Dear Almighty,

I must apologize for praying too late for the Big Boss. He was the boss of one of the largest groups here but had to step down because he had been charged of conspiracy in an important swindling scandal. Of course, he was acquitted, but his reputation suffered a big blow. I feel sorry for him. In comparison to to the others on the bandwagon, he was the nicest person. I can even say that he was like an altar boy amongst Ali Babas.

Almighty, I hear the Big Boss is in good health. Please let it be so for the rest of his days. Maybe you could also encourage him to play Go, the Ancient Chinese board game that is so good for keeping the brain fit in old age? and if he is not interested in Go, let him learn the tango. I hear the health benefits of tango are enormous.

Prayers for my enemies: Prayer for the accountant

Almighty, forgive him for he knew not what he was doing

The accountant's ascension has been irresistible. Apart from running his own consultancy, he is now at the head of a very important organization regrouping the large companies of the island.

However, a member of his family was recently accused of swindling. Let me therefore pray that this member of his family comes out clean from this ordeal.

Prayers for my enemies: Prayer for the architect

Almighty, forgive him for he knew not what he was doing

I recently wrote the following to the architect:

Dear H.,

I am writing to let you know how proud I am, as your first employer, to follow your success.

As you know, I've faced enormous problems after A. failed to pay me and after a banker and a bookmaker, helped with their allies (a notary and an accountant) swindled me of Rs10m.

As far as you are concerned, however, I have forgiven you despite the enormous harm you caused me, and I'll leave it to your conscience to decide how to wash the eternal shame of succeeding on the foundation of dishonesty.

I wish you plenty more success.

Regards,

Rafick

When he joined my office as trainee, the architect was a very capable young man. Corruption has the power to conquer even the most competent, however, so just before his training ended, 11 months later, he was lured by a hotel promoter to place his signature on the plans of a 4-star hotel prepared by my office. I could have reported him to the police for forgery, and following his conviction he would have been disbarred from the roll of registered architects, but thinking he just got married I did not proceed with the case.

Since then, the architect had been doing extremely well. He is now the promoter of several large real estate projects. I can safely say that he is doing much better than the hotel promoter.

Almighty, help the architect succeed even more, and let him always stay in good health. Maybe he'll transform into a New Sanyasi one of these days? And please, let him learn how to create happiness through the application of Feng Shui principles.

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams

Amazon Price: $6.89 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

"There are many aspects to success. Material wealth is only one of them. Moreover, success is a journey, not a destination. Material abundance, in all its expressions, makes the trip more enjoyable. But success also includes good health, energy and enthusiasm for life, fulfilling relationships, creative freedom, emotional and psychological stability, a sense of well-being, and peace of mind.

Even with the experience of all these, we will remain unfulfilled unless we nurture the seeds of divinity inside us. In reality, we are divinity in disguise, and the gods and goddesses in embryo that are contained within us seek to be fully materialized. True success is therefore the experience of the miraculous. It is the unfolding of the divinity within us. It is the perception of divinity wherever we go, in whatever we perceive-in the eyes of a child, in the beauty of a flower, in the flight of a bird.
" (Extract from the book.)

The seven laws of spiritual success are the keys to wisdom and ... true happiness.

A Lesson on Forgiveness from the Buddha

The Buddha was sitting under a tree talking to his disciples when a man came and spit on his face. He wiped it off, and he asked the man, "What next? What do you want to say next?" The man was a little puzzled because he himself never expected that when you spit on somebody's face, he will ask, "What next?" He had no such experience in his past. He had insulted people and they had become angry and they had reacted. Or if they were cowards and weaklings, they had smiled, trying to bribe the man. But Buddha was like neither, he was not angry nor in any way offended, nor in any way cowardly. But just matter-of-factly he said, "What next?" There was no reaction on his part.

Noah Levine has become the voice of the next generation of American Buddhism. In The Heart of the Revolution, he invites us on a journey to discover the loving heart. After many years he finally realized the truth of this essential Buddhist belief-compassion is a natural quality of the heart that is often lying dormant, waiting to be uncovered. Levine now reveals the tools that helped him embrace his true Buddha nature. The practices he describes in this book are not a quick fix but a map to a hidden treasure. Free yourself from the unnecessary suffering of life and join the rebellion fueled not by hatred but by forgiveness, compassion, and kindness. (Amazon product description.)

Another Lesson in Forgiveness: Uncle Tom's Cabin

Many of you may have read this epic novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, a nineteenth century abolitionist and author. This novel, believed to be the precursor of the Civil War, became such a sensation that President Abraham Lincoln is purported to have said when he met Stowe, "So here is the little lady who made this big war."

A Lesson in Forgiveness

Gandhi and the Hindu who killed a Muslim

While Gandhi was fasting to end the Calcutta riots, soon after India became independent, a Hindu man came to his bedside and threw a piece of pharata on his bed.
"Eat," he said. "I'm going to Hell, but not with your soul on my head."
"Only God decides who goes to Hell," Gandhi said.
"I killed a child. I smashed his head against a wall."
"Why"
They killed my son. My boy. The Muslims killed my son."
"I know a way out of Hell. Find a child, a child whose mother and father have been killed. A little boy of about this this high and raise him as your own. Only be sure that he is a Muslim and that you raise him as one."

When he was eight years old, Nathan had been declared dead but he mysteriously came back to life. Twenty years later, he is now a brilliant lawyer. A strange doctor lands into his existence and disrupts all his bearings. Nathan will discover why he had come back to life...

This is a wonderful story about the importance of forgiving the ones we love but from whom we have been separated by life's circumstances, of being forgiven by them, and of reconciling ourselves with them before it is too late.

We are all looking for forgiveness: the story of Paco

At the start of his short story, The Capital of the World, Ernest Hemingway recounts a popular Spanish tale about a father and a son named "Paco," one of the most common nicknames in all of Spain. According to the story, Paco rebels against his father's influence. Perhaps he is unwilling to follow his father's rules, preferring to define his own code for living. Maybe he doesn't want to take on the responsibilities his father asks of him or face up to the character problems and growth issues his father wants him to see.

I think that is very good to forgive. I would not pray for them -- let them do whatever they want, and I would just go ahead with my life with open heart and mind. The lens is beautiful and the stories of all the people involved makes it stand out as personal and moving-- here come my blessing too along the blessings of the other Angels.

You are a great educator for this important lesson. If we can't learn to forgive then we continue to carry the pain. You explained it well by saying that the people who hurt us do so because they are weak. This understanding makes it a little easier to forgive. Thanks for this extremely helpful lens.

Moving. It takes great strength to persist in forgiving those who so egregiously hurt us. I pray that healing and love return to your heart. Over time, as the forgiveness does it's work on you, I hope you will return to this lens and change it. Show us how it is working in your life. You are an example to us all. I give gratitude for your strength in sharing so personal a journey.

God teach us to pray and care for the lost one. I like to tell a story about a Shepherd and his sheep's. As he gather the sheep to care and feeding them, he take good care of the sheep and did not realize there is a missing one. An angel speaking to him and said go look for the lost one and bring him back, not to worry for the ones that are o.k.
God teach us to care and pray for the lost one, your enemy... So they know God. My believe, my thought. God Bless you all. I wish my English is better so I can express my feeling when I write this post.
