More Children showing pre diabetic symptoms

Ranked #24,978 in Healthy Living, #346,855 overall

More and more children are showing pre diabetic symptoms as the obesity epidemic runs rampart in our communities.

Type 2 Diabetes used to be associated with adult onset but we are seeing more and more children being pre diabetic. Obesity and sedimentary lifestyles have invaded our children and youth. My own son is more likely a pre diabetic and considered obese as is the case in every One out three children. This trend is on an upside swing as we speak and shows little to sign of abating.
As a parent and a diabetic, I am very very afraid that my son will become a diabetic too and I cannot see myself dooming him to this life.
So as a call to action, I am using the abilities and experience that I have accrued in the many years since I have had diabetes to fight this disease in an ongoing effort.

Are you pre diabetic - the symptoms

pre diabetic levelsBeing pre diabetic means you have an elevated fasting blood glucose of 110mg/dl compared to the normal ranges of 80-90mg/dl. If you are over 120 mg/dl then you are considered a diabetic but before you hit that range then you are basically progressing in that direction. These numbers outlined above are fasting numbers, they are obviously different if you are not fasting.
Symptoms will include:
1. Higher than normal fasting blood glucose levels (above 110mgdl)
2. Frequent urination
3. Thirst
4. dizziness
5. Irritability
6. Blurry vision

Pre Diabetic - How to tell if your child is afflicted

glucose tolerance testAn Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is performed by a doctor to see if you are a pre diabetic.
After fasting for 8-12 hrs before the test, the tester will give you an orange liquid to drink and the draw blood every half hour there after to determine how quickly the glucose is absorbed into your body and how fast the glucose is broken down.
The results will determine if you are pre diabetic or not.

Pre Diabetic - Treatment

While diabetes is an incurable disease, pre diabetes can be prevented from becoming full blown diabetes by using these few simple methods
1. Weight Loss - there is a direct correlation between Obesity and diabetes and loosing as little as 10% of your child's body weight will go a long way in preventing diabetes.
2. Change in diet - choosing healthier alternatives to the sugary products easily attainable
3. Physical activity - Go out and have fun with your kids, it is recommended that a child should have 1 hour everyday for physical activity, a parent can join and make it a more fun family affair.

Remember the old nursery rhyme that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, well Effective pre diabetic management is that apple a day and it is essential to staving off this disease.
Hi My name is Ronald Gregory and I have a child who is more likely a pre diabetic and I will do anything and everything in my power to make sure he doesn't end up a diabetic, for I live with diabetes on a daily basis and would not wish this disease upon anyone especially my own family.
I am chronicling this journey back to health on my Diabetes Management blog. It takes a village to raise a child and no one should have to go through this alone. Lets fight Obesity in our children and make a healthier life for future generations.
