How to Stay Healthy During Pregnancy

Learn the secret to staying healthy during your pregnancy as well as looking great, loving your pregnancy, and regaining your figure once you have had the baby. We all know how important it is to maintain a sensible amount of weight gain during pregnancy but becareful! Make sure that every calorie that goes into your body will benefit you and your baby.

When I became pregnant the first time, I weighed just about 100 lbs. I was concerned about putting on weight but knew that it was needed and required for my baby's sake. I ate a very healthy diet including fresh fruits and vegetables and lots of salads. I was one of the lucky ones, I never did get morning sickness and felt great throughout my pregnancy. My only cravings were for Deli meat which I would eat in handfulls straight from the fridge! My friends were envious of me, but in a nice way!

I followed a sensible exercise program, talking nice long walks until it just became too hot in Texas! I then took up walking indoors on a treadmill which was much cooler! Just to make a change I would go to the Mall - not to shop, but to walk- Inside in the A/C - perfect! Now I have since stumbled upon a wonderful fitness program which basically follows the same rules - healthy diet with exercise and making sure that your body gets all the nutrients it needs during this wonderful time. It is called Pregnancy without Pounds and is available as an ebook or on cd. (see useful links below for more details)

Nutrition During Pregnancy

Nutrition plays a huge part in how you feel during your pregnancy. After all when you feel as big as a house, your back aches from the extra weight and you have never seen you feet and ankles looking so swollen, the last thing you really feel like doing is preparing a healthy meal. It is tempting to just pick at bits and pieces and not eat well.

However, this is the time when you and your baby need good nutrients from good healthy food. Part of the reason women gain too much weight when they are pregnant is that they are eating the wrong types of food. Your baby will take what it needs from you, even if that means taking calcium from your bones or depleting your iron reserves (therefore making you anemic). So try to take really good care of yourself and watch what goes into your mouth. You must get the nutrients from the foods that you eat in order for you baby to grow and not use up your body reserves. Your Dr. may prescribe prenatal vitamins also which is probably a good idea.

One tip - keep a food diary if necessary to keep a record of what you eat.

If you eat well and exercise you will feel wonderful during your pregnancy and possibly even avoid morning sickness, hair loss, and other pregnancy side effects.

Exercise During Pregnancy

By now you know that you need to exercise when pregnant to keep your body in the best shape possible. But it is important to know how to modify your exercise plan while pregnant and more importantly know which exercises to avoid. such as don't lift over your head or lie on your back after the first trimester.

The treadmill is a great cardiovascular exercise for you and walking on a treadmill is not only safe when done correctly and in moderation but also very beneficial. Start slowly and build your speed up, do not step on a treadmill if it is moving, wear good training shoes, keep breathing normally and have your water bottle handy and take frequent sips.

Planning Your Meals

Scrummylicious Meal Planner

Now that you are pregnant, don't spend your time wandering around the grocery stores trying to think of healthy and nutritious meals to cook. Spend that extra time with your feet up relaxing and looking after yourself. Menu planning is the first line of defense in the fight to an organized kitchen so go ahead and get organized for the upcoming arrival of your bundle of joy!

My favorite meal planner is by The Victoria Chart Company, called the Scrummylicious Meal Planner. I use it every week and it takes the stress of thinking each day "what shall I cook?" If you already have children, you can involve them with the weekly menu - foods that they like and enjoy and more importantly will eat! If you get the "buy-in" from your family before the food is even served to the table then meal times are a lot less stressful.
