Pregnancy and Ovulation Tests

Week One and Preconception

Infact this is the week that you ovulate and the egg is fertilized by the sperm.

Whilst trying to conceive and during the first 3 months of pregnancy make sure you are taking your Nature Made Folic Acid also known as vitamin B9, this helps to prevent Spina Bifida. Studies also show that it can reduce the risk of your baby suffering from Cleft Lip and Palate. Rates of miscarriage are also reduced amongst women who take Folic Acid supplements.

Extra Iron in your diet is also important to avoid anemia, as during pregnancy your body produces extra blood to support the baby. You can either take iron as a tablet or increase the amount of dark green vegetables in your diet.

Calcium is equally important for you and your baby during your pregnancy, so drink a glass of milk everyday and eat a pot of yoghurt. This is sufficient to support your body as it's calcium resources from your bones are taken to help your baby grow. If you can't stomach dairy products then try the fruity chewable calcium supplements.

Week One - What Does My Baby Look Like?

You may not even be pregnant yet! But you will be ovulating. Use an ovulation calculator or a Clear Blue Ovulation Test to check when is the best time in your cycle for making babies! After ovulation the sperm will meet the egg and hopefully penetrate it's membrane. Now your baby is a ball of rapidly multiplying cells. The baby's gender is determined as soon as the egg is fertilized.

Week Two - What Does My Baby Look Like?

Your baby, called a blastocyst at this stage, is still a ball of cells with amniotic fluid around it. This fluid will protect your baby during your pregnancy. Implantation will occur and you may experience some slight bleeding or spotting.

Week Three and Four - What Does My Baby Look Like?

The babies nervous system develops and it's heart and circulatory system begins to form.

Week Five - What Does My Baby look Like?

Your baby's heart will begin to beat and you will be able to listen to this using a doppler. Cells begin to form which will become your baby's lungs and brain. Tiny buds form to create arms and legs. The heart is pumping around the circulatory system. The umbilical cord develops. This will provide the baby with oxygen and nutrients and remove waste during the rest of your pregnancy.

Week Six - What Does My Baby Look Like?

The baby's brain continues to develop and it's arms and legs are growing. The lenses of the eyes form and nostrils develop. The intestines grow within the umbilical cord.

What about me during my pregnancy?

Maternity wear, eating healthily, breast feeding.

Make sure you are taking care of yourself, to avoid weight gain during pregnancy. Eat healthily and do some light exercise. Remember there are some foods you should not eat during pregnancy. Take your vitamins. You may be feeling emotional and tired, this is due to the increase in hormones in your body. If you feel bloated wear comfortable clothes.

If you are experiencing spotting do not be alarmed, many women have this in early pregnancy, and go on to have successful pregnancies. However, it may be a sign of miscarriage so contact your midwife or doctor who will be able to check whether there is a problem or not.

Here are some items you may find useful during your pregnancy.
