Welcome to Preparing for Childbirth and Parenting!
Pregnancy is the time when a woman's body goes through changes more rapidly than any other time in her life, except her own nine months in the womb before her birth. Sometimes there are more questions than answers.
Parenting has begun as already we are surrounded with choices and decisions that affect our baby and it hasn't even joined us in the world yet.
Come in and look around. A constantly growing body of articles and resources is available for both for pregnant couples and childbirth educators.
The amount of resources has quickly surpassed this one little lens so look for the larger Pregnancy Class Group and other lenses on the roll for additional and specific resources!

My daughter was born 2 months early - arrived the very day we were to take our first LaMaze class. We were so unprepared! But everything turned out well in the end. Posted January 24, 2008 |

Choosing a Childbirth Education Class - Common Questions and Their Answers
Some things to consider.
Won't the doctor tell me everything you need to know?
Unfortunately, that simply isn't true. The average prenatal visit with the OB lasts only 5-6 minutes! Taking a class during pregnancy can help you mentally, physically and emotionally prepare for what's to come.
So what class should I take?
That depends on your and what you want to accomplish. There are many good organizations out there that certify childbirth educators - watch for another lens that will detail those options and what makes each special.
Hospital-Based Classes - Sometimes a hospital will offer a class or class series. These can sometimes be closed to only mothers who are planning to deliver at the hospital. They can also, sometimes, be more focused on the hospital policies and regulations instead of actually preparing you for pregnancy, labor, and parenting. You'll find it helpful to attend at least for the tour and policy information. Some couples choose to take both, the hospital class and an independent class.
Independent Classes - These are classes taught by an instructor certified from an outside organization or teaching on his or her own. Sometimes these instructors have more freedom in how the classes are structured. But on the other hand, you might not be sure what to expect or what the instructors qualifications are. Independent teachers can have more flexibility in personalizing a class for you.
What should I keep in mind when making my decision?
Speak with the instructor about how many class sessions there will be and what each class covers. Most teachers will have a class outline available that you can look over ahead of time. You are also free to ask for references of other past students. Inquire about the focus of the class and get a feel for whether the instructor is someone you feel comfortable with.
Niche Classes - Some classes are very specific and focused on certain niches. Many instructors offer single-parent classes, teen mom classes, siblings classes (geared for young children who are expecting a sibling soon!), post partum care or infant care classes, baby massage seminars, breastfeeding help and more! If there is something you want more information about just ask your instructor!! Chances are she can put a course together for you, or will know another instructor teaching what you want.
