Pregnant Over 40?

Over the Hill and Having a Baby
I can imagine when my daughter or son graduates from High School. Once the ceremony is over, I will nudge my husband from his "old man's nap" and get up (hopefully without falling) to make it over to our child. I will lean over my walker and give my child a big hug. Everyone who comes up to us will say, "Are these your grandparents?" Oh...yes! I can't wait.

Why We Didn't Have Another Child

Anyone who has read any of my lenses knows that I have a college student. She is our only child. She always wanted a brother or sister. It is not that I hadn't thought about another child. The cost of day care, the expense of raising a child and wanting to establish my career, kept me away from this. Not to mention the fact that I had morning sickness pretty much throughout the entire pregnancy. Top it off with migraines almost every day and in labor for three weeks before giving birth.
The first nine months of my daughter's life she had chronic colic, where she would not cry, but scream for hours night and day. She had a biblical hernia, which eventually healed itself. Once the colic ended, she had nine months of continuous ear infections. As soon as one infection cleared up, another one would begin again. We finally took her to a specialist, where he put tubes in her ears. We should have taken her to him earlier, but our primary physician wasn't one for this type of surgery. Though after the surgery, she was a happy child. Given all of this, no wonder we didn't have another child.

70 Year Old Woman Gives Birth

The record is held by a 70-year-old Indian woman giving birth to twins on July 4th 2008.
"If I am the world's oldest mother it means nothing to me," Omkari Panwar said after the arrival of the babies, a boy and girl born a month premature and weighing just two pounds each. "I just want to see my new babies and care for them while I am still able."
The babies' father, a 77 years old retired farmer Charan Singh Panwar, who sold off his buffalo, and burned through his life savings just to pay for the in vitro fertilization treatments to help his wife to become pregnant. "The treatment cost me a fortune but the birth of a son makes it all worthwhile. I can die a happy man and a proud father," after doctors said it was likely that both babies were strong enough to survive.
"My daughters' have got a little brother, my husband and I have got an heir - that is all we ever wanted."
This is India, where there is a different cultural value placed females.
The previous recorded oldest woman to give birth was then-66-year-old Romanian Adriana Iliescu, who welcomed a daughter in 2005. That official record may stand, since Panwar doesn't have a birth certificate and estimates her age by claiming she was nine years old when the British left India in 1947.

Risk of Being 40 and Pregnant
Many women have had success births with healthy babies after 40. But you should be aware of the possible risk.
Some of the risk include miscarriage, fetal distress, low birth weight (of the baby), Down Syndrome in your child, and high blood pressure throughout the pregnancy. There is a risk of pregnancy diabetes, Stillbirth and Cesarean birth for those over 40. Make sure that you take your prenatal vitamins, eat a healthy diet, exercise appropriately and get plenty of rest.

Advertisers Know I'm Pregnant

For months now I have been getting a free subscription to "American Baby" and "nourishing dreams" magazines. Along with countless coupons and information mailed to me on parenting for my new baby. I have diaper samples and formula. I can't wait to see what else I receive. Obliviously the advertisers know something that I don't know. After all they can't possibly send all of this to a person who isn't pregnant.
I had just got done writing a weight loss diary. With a plexo for everyone to add their lenses to. My Quest for Healthy Living Diary This lens should have come first if I was pregnant. This would have explained some of the weight gain if I was pregnant. (Note: Do not diet when you are pregnant.)
My niece, who recently announced her pregnancy is getting all my gifts.
(Since I first wrote this, my niece gave birth to a cute baby boy with a full head of hair. She has since thanked me for all the gifts.)

Pregnancy and Birth - F.A.Q.
Q: Does pregnancy affect a woman's memory?
A: Most of the ladies I asked don't remember.
Q: Q: My wife is 5 months pregnant and so moody that she's borderline irrational.
A: So what's your question?
Q: When does a woman's biological clock start ticking?
A: Right after she looks in the mirror and thinks, "On my God, crow's feet!"
Q: What is the most common pregnancy craving?
A: For men to be the ones who get pregnant.
Q: Should I have a baby after 35?
A. No, 35 children is way too many already.
Q: I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
A: With any luck, right after he finishes college.
Q: How will I know if my vomiting is morning sickness or the flu?
A: If it's the flu, you'll get better.
Q: The more pregnant I get, the more often strangers smile at me. Why?
A: Cause you're fatter then they are.
Q: My childbirth instructor says it's not pain I'll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right?
A: Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current.
Q: When is the best time to get an epidural?
A: Right after you find out you're pregnant.
Q: Is there a reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labor?
A: Not unless the word "alimony" is a concern for you.
Q: I'm modest. Once I start to deliver, who will see me in that delicate position?
A: Authorized hospital personnel only -- doctors, nurses, orderlies, photographers, florists, cleaning crews, journalists, etc.

supermom_in_ny says:
Yes! Mom to 7 kids (5 biological) and each pregnancy was different. With one I craved pot roast, candy and veggies. With another I craved ice water around the clock, with my last children I craved milk shakes. There was a pregnancy where I lost weight-couldn't keep anything down. That pregnancy was horrible because I had a full time job!
Blessings to you and your family.

For some reason -- doughnuts and pizza for two of my pregnancies. I was into eating healthy at the time and wouldn't give in.

Chocolate, potato chips, and seafood - all while not pregnant. While pregnant I craved ice cream, but nothing weird. My younger daughter hates milks, but while pregnant she couldn't get enough of it ... and now that she's nursing she's still craving moo juice. Mother Nature knows best.

CDT says:
When I was pregnant I craved a certain type of sandwich - it had to be Cheese, Banana & Marmite and nothing else. I ate these every day for months on end and it was all I wanted :) Marmite is yeast extract - an infamous British food product which diversifies opinion - you either love it or hate it! It's very good for you though and just so happens to be high in folic acid and vitamin B! Nature has a way of making sure that pregnant ladies eat what's good for them and the baby I suppose :)

- Your lens made me smile. I had my first child at age 45 and am happier than I have ever been. While my baby also had colic and cried almost non stop for 6 months, she is now 15 months old and the absolute joy of my life. I gave up my career as a corporate VP to stay home with her and it is the best decision I ever made. Blessings to you! Read my story at http://www.pregnancyover40now.com

- My grandmother had my mother (only child) when she was over 40. My mother (who had seven) had my sister when she was over 40. I was still open to the idea at 40, but it never happened. We are all different when it comes to age. My grandmother lived to 105 years and spoke often of how her seventies were her middle age. Take heart! 40 is not old for everyone. Look at all those beauties you have included pictures of!

- I was born in 1947. My son was born in 1967. My daughter was born in1987. Thank goodness 2007 came and went uneventfully. I think I enjoyed being a mother the second time around much more than the first. My daughter is due any day now and I'm looking forward to being a grandparent. Thanks for the fun lens.

- Oh my goodness what a funny lens! Both my daughters were born before I was 25, but interestingly they both waited until after 30 to start their own families. They now say they think it would have been easier if they'd been younger - and had more energy. I just roll my eyes ...

- What a great lens! It was fun to read. Fortunately, I had my boys at 27 and 31 and, Lord willing, I am all done. I can barely keep up with them now, God help me if I tried to do in my forties!

- Ha, great lens! I had my last child as a single parent when I was 43.. my first when I was 20. My youngest now will soon be 18 and it's been great... Nobody's ever assumed I was his grandma, they keep you young! (That may happen in 10 years or so when I finally give in and get old). After 41 years of parenting, though, I'm ready for a break!

- My Mum was 42 when she had me.
I had my twins at 28 and I look at all these women you mention here having twins at 40 and wonder where they find the energy to keep up with them! I had enough trouble in my late 20's and 30's looking after my two - and as for that lady who had twins when she was 70 :O...I hope she's got lots of family and friends to help out :)
Personally, I'm now in my 40's and my life is at a stage where I really don't want any more children...if one came along, then I'd adapt, but it's not something I want.
For those that do, then go for it - my Mum did a good job raising me. My regret about my Mum eing "older than average" is that by the time my own children came along she was in her 70's and not very well, so she didn't really enjoy her grandsons and she died when they were young, so they don't remember much about her :(
