Over the Hill and Having a Baby

Old, middle age, one foot in the grave, half dead, over the hill and pregnant...How could a woman my age; in my right mind possibly have a baby? Sure it can happen. It happens all the time. After all, I'm not menopausal.

I can imagine when my daughter or son graduates from High School. Once the ceremony is over, I will nudge my husband from his "old man's nap" and get up (hopefully without falling) to make it over to our child. I will lean over my walker and give my child a big hug. Everyone who comes up to us will say, "Are these your grandparents?" Oh...yes! I can't wait.

Why We Didn't Have Another Child

Anyone who has read any of my lenses knows that I have a college student. She is our only child. She always wanted a brother or sister. It is not that I hadn't thought about another child. The cost of day care, the expense of raising a child and wanting to establish my career, kept me away from this. Not to mention the fact that I had morning sickness pretty much throughout the entire pregnancy. Top it off with migraines almost every day and in labor for three weeks before giving birth.

The first nine months of my daughter's life she had chronic colic, where she would not cry, but scream for hours night and day. She had a biblical hernia, which eventually healed itself. Once the colic ended, she had nine months of continuous ear infections. As soon as one infection cleared up, another one would begin again. We finally took her to a specialist, where he put tubes in her ears. We should have taken her to him earlier, but our primary physician wasn't one for this type of surgery. Though after the surgery, she was a happy child. Given all of this, no wonder we didn't have another child.

But soon...??? See "Advertisers Know I'm Pregnant"

70 Year Old Woman Gives Birth

The record is held by a 70-year-old Indian woman giving birth to twins on July 4th 2008.
"If I am the world's oldest mother it means nothing to me," Omkari Panwar said after the arrival of the babies, a boy and girl born a month premature and weighing just two pounds each. "I just want to see my new babies and care for them while I am still able."

The babies' father, a 77 years old retired farmer Charan Singh Panwar, who sold off his buffalo, and burned through his life savings just to pay for the in vitro fertilization treatments to help his wife to become pregnant. "The treatment cost me a fortune but the birth of a son makes it all worthwhile. I can die a happy man and a proud father," after doctors said it was likely that both babies were strong enough to survive.
"My daughters' have got a little brother, my husband and I have got an heir - that is all we ever wanted."

This is India, where there is a different cultural value placed females.

The previous recorded oldest woman to give birth was then-66-year-old Romanian Adriana Iliescu, who welcomed a daughter in 2005. That official record may stand, since Panwar doesn't have a birth certificate and estimates her age by claiming she was nine years old when the British left India in 1947.

Risk of Being 40 and Pregnant

Many women have had success births with healthy babies after 40. But you should be aware of the possible risk.

Some of the risk include miscarriage, fetal distress, low birth weight (of the baby), Down Syndrome in your child, and high blood pressure throughout the pregnancy. There is a risk of pregnancy diabetes, Stillbirth and Cesarean birth for those over 40. Make sure that you take your prenatal vitamins, eat a healthy diet, exercise appropriately and get plenty of rest.

Advertisers Know I'm Pregnant

For months now I have been getting a free subscription to "American Baby" and "nourishing dreams" magazines. Along with countless coupons and information mailed to me on parenting for my new baby. I have diaper samples and formula. I can't wait to see what else I receive. Obliviously the advertisers know something that I don't know. After all they can't possibly send all of this to a person who isn't pregnant.

I had just got done writing a weight loss diary. With a plexo for everyone to add their lenses to. My Quest for Healthy Living Diary This lens should have come first if I was pregnant. This would have explained some of the weight gain if I was pregnant. (Note: Do not diet when you are pregnant.)

My niece, who recently announced her pregnancy is getting all my gifts.

(Since I first wrote this, she gave birth to a cute baby boy with a full head.)

Pregnancy and Birth - F.A.Q.

Q: Does pregnancy affect a woman's memory?
A: Most of the ladies I asked don't remember.

Q: Q: My wife is 5 months pregnant and so moody that she's borderline irrational.
A: So what's your question?

Q: When does a woman's biological clock start ticking?
A: Right after she looks in the mirror and thinks, "On my God, crow's feet!"

Q: What is the most common pregnancy craving?
A: For men to be the ones who get pregnant.

Q: Should I have a baby after 35?
A. No, 35 children is way too many already.

Q: I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
A: With any luck, right after he finishes college.

Q: How will I know if my vomiting is morning sickness or the flu?
A: If it's the flu, you'll get better.

Q: The more pregnant I get, the more often strangers smile at me. Why?
A: Cause you're fatter then they are.

Q: My childbirth instructor says it's not pain I'll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right?
A: Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current.

Q: When is the best time to get an epidural?
A: Right after you find out you're pregnant.

Q: Is there a reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labor?
A: Not unless the word "alimony" is a concern for you.

Q: I'm modest. Once I start to deliver, who will see me in that delicate position?
A: Authorized hospital personnel only -- doctors, nurses, orderlies, photographers, florists, cleaning crews, journalists, etc.

Food Cravings

Any strange ones?

Have you ever had food cravings? (Pregnant or not or if you are a man)

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes I have had food cravings.

CDT says:

When I was pregnant I craved a certain type of sandwich - it had to be Cheese, Banana & Marmite and nothing else. I ate these every day for months on end and it was all I wanted :) Marmite is yeast extract - an infamous British food product which diversifies opinion - you either love it or hate it! It's very good for you though and just so happens to be high in folic acid and vitamin B! Nature has a way of making sure that pregnant ladies eat what's good for them and the baby I suppose :)

Sojourn says:

Watermelon. Lots of watermelon. And corn on the cob. Not an easy thing to have on hand but I managed. :)

Amyji says:

I craved sour foods. Pickled anything. Then when I was nursing, I craved this particular fruit called a rambutan (we were living abroad in a tropical country) and my husband bought them about 2 kilos (about 5 pounds) at a time and that would last a few days.

sandyspider says:

When I WAS pregnant with my daughter I had cravings that lasted for 3 weeks for fresh strawberries. (No frozen). They were out season, which made it harder for my husband to find them. He was lucky. His life would have been cut short.

No that doesn't exist.

Ha, great lens! I had my last child as a single parent when I was 43.. my first when I was 20. My youngest now will soon be 18 and it's been great... Nobody's ever assumed I was his grandma, they keep you young! (That may happen in 10 years or so when I finally give in and get old). After 41 years of parenting, though, I'm ready for a break!

My Mum was 42 when she had me.

I had my twins at 28 and I look at all these women you mention here having twins at 40 and wonder where they find the energy to keep up with them! I had enough trouble in my late 20's and 30's looking after my two - and as for that lady who had twins when she was 70 :O...I hope she's got lots of family and friends to help out :)

Personally, I'm now in my 40's and my life is at a stage where I really don't want any more children...if one came along, then I'd adapt, but it's not something I want.

For those that do, then go for it - my Mum did a good job raising me. My regret about my Mum eing "older than average" is that by the time my own children came along she was in her 70's and not very well, so she didn't really enjoy her grandsons and she died when they were young, so they don't remember much about her :(

Neat lens! I had my first child at 27 and my third child at 37 and I thought I was waiting until the last minute. :) I'm feeling better. I do periodically calculate how old I'll be when the baby graduates college. Eek. But he's so cute, I wouldn't have done it any other way.
