The Premier League as it now stands was formed on the 20th of February 1992, following a decision of all Football League clubs.The Football League was formed in 1888 and was scrapped in favour of the lucrative live coverage from TV with rights creating an important revenue stream for all football clubs involved.
The change resulted in revenues rising to as much as £1.4 billion (about $2 billion) per season and in the Premier League becoming the most watched football league in the world.
To date, there have been 42 football clubs taking part in the FA Premier League, but only 4 have managed to become champions - Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
The current champions are Manchester United, who won their tenth Premier League title in the 2007-08 season, the most than any of their Premier League competitors.
Aston Villa and Sunderland were the teams dominated the early seasons of the Football League. Manchester United and Newcastle United started to catch up with successful bids to be crowned champions.

The Football League is the oldest in the world and was founded in 1888. It now represents 3 divisions, with the top one called the Championship (Coca Cola Championship for sponsoring reasons.

At the start the points system awarded 2 points for a win and one point for a draw. The 3 points for each win were introduced in 1981.
Substitutes were introduced in the Football League in 1965 and only for injured players. The next season substitutions were allowed for any reason.
The first £1 million transfer was that of Trevor Francis from Birmingham City to Nottingham Forest, back in February 1979.
The first £2 million transfer was that of Tony Cottee (West Ham United to Everton, July 1988)
