Part Two Of How To Bring Your New Baby Home To Meet Your Dog

In my last article about how to prepare your dog for your new baby, we covered all the thing you should do before you bring your baby home from the hospital. In this article, we'll cover the actual meeting of baby and pup and what you should do and be aware of.
The actual introduction and the first few meetings are very important for all concerned. How everyone handles the first encounter will be indicative of how they will get along in the upcoming months and years. That is why I can't stress enough how important this first introduction is and how you must prepare for it slowly and thoroughly.

Here are some tips to make your first meeting successful.

1) Since you have been away from home bringing new children into the world and having fun with labor, your dog is going to be missing you. For this reason have someone else carry the baby inside the home while you give your pup love and pay attention only to him. This is very important.

2) Bring home a new dog toy or special treat and spend some time playing before the big introduction. Wait until your dog's excitement from your homecoming calms down before the introduction.

3) It might be a good idea to use a leash to restrain your dog, just in case. Show him the baby, all the while talking to him and let him sniff your baby's hands and feet. Never force him to get close and let him investigate at his own speed.
4) Never leave the two unattended as your baby can not fend for his/herself and a dog can accidentally smother a baby. Plus your baby may scare your dog by making some strange move or noise which could cause your dog to nip or bite out of fear. If your dog acts aggressively, remove him from the room until he is calm. Stay with him and try to calm him then try the introduction again.

5) After the initial meeting, sit on the couch with your baby and your dog at your side. Speak to both calmly and show your love to both. Reward your pup for his good behavior so he will associate the baby with a positive experience. Remember the importance on never forcing the baby and dog together and never leave them unattended.

- Obviously life is going to be different and more hectic with the arrival of your baby, but try to maintain a regular routine and always try to make time for your dog. I'm sure you'll find that everything will work out just fine and that in time baby and pup will be the best of friends and bring much amusement and joy into your life together.
