Having problems with progressive lenses? Or has using your PC become less comfortable? You're not alone! The last 5 years have taught me a lot about presbyopia, progressive and other lenses, and computer vision. I'm hoping that what I learned will help someone else.

Things You Should Know About Lenses

This is the most important stuff I learned

There are different brands of progressive lenses, and they really are different. Good brands include Varilux, Rodenstock, Zeiss, Hoya, Seiko, Sola and Shamir. If you're having problems with progressive lenses, don't settle for a non-premium brand.

How your lenses are fitted is much more important with progressives than with single-vision lenses. Go to a good optician.

There are different kinds of lens materials, for any kind of lens.

It's much too easy to get bad lenses (either inaccurate or just badly made), especially with progressives. There can be a big difference in the quality and accuracy of lenses you can get.

Progressive lenses are a compromise. You might be happier with separate reading or PC glasses (or both), in addition to progressives.

Seeing Computers

Seeing my PC got much harder when presbyopia hit me. Here's what I learned:

If you're uncomfortable looking at your monitor, get computer glasses. They're worth the money.

You have to know how far from your monitor you sit to get a good PC prescription. Measure several times a day; it may change from morning to afternoon.

Unless you like having headaches, set your CRT to the highest refresh rate allowed.

A lot of people say LCD screens (the flat ones) are easier to see than CRTs. But keep in mind that their pixels are fixed size, unlike with CRTs, so shop around to get one that's the resolution you like.

Protect Your Eyes

Wear sunglasses

UV rays are just as bad for your eyes as they are for your skin.

Good sunglasses are one of the best ways to protect your eyes. These big sunglasses below fit right over the biggest glasses, and protect your eyes from the sun in any direction.
