Disability Books For Preschoolers

Ranked #2,213 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #90,489 overall

Over the last few months, I've had several preschool teachers ask for books about children with disabilities. Many were doing a unit study on disabilities or recently had a child with disabilities join their center and wanted to share books with the other children. However we soon found out nearly all books on the subject are written for school aged children, include dated or outdated information or are poorly written... unlike the titles below....

George and the Missing Puzzle Piece

Children love Marc Brown's characters from the Arthur series. While Brown has yet to make a book on the subject, the TV series did make an episode where George makes a new friend who has Asperger's. The video introduces several characteristics that are common among many children with Asperger's in a non-judgmental manner.

If you're wanting to introduce children to sign language, there's no better DVD series for children than Signing Time. Mother Rachel Coleman created the series after her daughter Leah was born deaf. Leah and her cousin Alex star in most of the episodes which allow children to see other children communicating with the signs they're learning.

You have put together a great list of preschool disability books. This is a wonderful way for children to identify with others, like themselves or different. You have my blessings and a bit o' sunshine.

Great resources. I would like to see more about kids with mental disorders, like bi-polar. I've seen kids who look normal in every way, but who have strange behaviors due to mental disorders treated horribly in schools. Both by the kids and the teachers. They are the most mis-understood of all.

This is a great resource. It's wonderful for kids to be able to read about others like them or their classmates so they have a better understanding.

I went out to read some of the reviews of these books and am quite impressed with your selections. Although I don't currently have people with disabilities in my life, some of them are interesting reading that we will check out. Angel blessed for sharing this information.

Each one is the best. Where one child would not understand one book he/she would pick up the other book and understand completely. Grown ups are like that too. I'm in a wheelchair and found children always accept me as I am where adults look towards those in wheelchairs with wonder of what caused them to be in a wheelchair. I suggest everyone ride one for one day and all questions will be answered, for the most part. Thanks for this special lens.
