It's never too early for science

There are so many things that we can do with preschoolers to help develop their scientific thinking skills.  Let's get them thinking scientifically at an early age because there is so much to explore.

4 Reasons to Include Science Throughout Your Day

  1. Your child will learn how to ask appropriate questions.
  2. They will develop logical thinking skills.
  3. They will com to understand how the world around them works.
  4. Respect for life and nature will be gained.
  5. It's fun and when kids are having fun they are focused, curious, involved and learning. - Thanks for the contribution Evelyn!

The Butterfly Pavilion

There is no better way to teach preschoolers about butterflies and their metamorphosis than showing them how it happens.

I recently found this butterfly pavilion on sale for a whopping 60% off!

It is a great deal and comes with a certificate that you send in for 10 Painted Lady butterfly larvae.

Have Fun With Goop

One of my favorite activities to do with young children is making goop. The safest goop recipe for preschools is just cornstarch and water.

All you have to do is put some cornstarch in a bowl and add water until it feels slimy, not powdery.

Before you mix the two ingredients have the children touch them. Then you can ask some questions.

1. What does the cornstarch feel like?
2. What do you think will happen when we mix these together?

As you are pouring the water into the bowl be sure to comment about how easily the water pours.

After you have mixed the ingredients you can ask:

1. What does the goop feel like?
2. How is it different from the cornstarch?
3. How is it different from the water?

Most kids absolutely love playing with goop. Allow them to explore and listen to the words that are used. Repeat the comments that you feel are most insightful.

If you have not made cornstarch and water goop before this video shows you what you can expect from your mixture. I still find it amazing that just these two basic ingrediens have this outcome when combined.

A Surface Tension Experiment

This video states that it is a 6th grade experiment, but my son did this in preschool. It is very cool to watch.

You can also make a surface tension boat with your preschooler. Here is a link to the activity with an explanation of what is happening.

The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

My son's favorite science activity from preschool was, hands down, watching the life cycle of a butterfly. They were able to watch every stage of the process. He even learned how to distinguish a male Monarch butterfly from a female.

Here is a Butterfly Larvae Kit - watch as lowly caterpillars form chrysalides then become lovely butterflies. There are many books about butterflies that are perfect for preschoolers. Our favorite is "Catterpillars and Butterflies" by Emma Fischel.
