Do Campaign Posters Work?

This recent campaign poster by urban street artist Shepard Fairey of presidential-hopeful Senator Obama is causing quite a stir. Do you think campaign posters effect mass consciousness and, if so, how?

Obama Poster Causing a Stir

This poster has been called everything from weird and eerie to downright Orwellian.

Gar Joseph at the Philadelphia Daily thinks the styling and use of the single word "Hope" make it reminiscent of the Soviet-style heroic propaganda while fellow blogger Jim Johnson writes, "...the Obama poster is not just "affirmative" but suspiciously diffuse...This mantra of hope makes me want to put my hand over my wallet to make sure my pocket is not being picked."

There is no doubt that popular images have an effect on our consciousness but how strong is that effect? Could a campaign poster sway you to vote for (or against) a candidate? Certainly, when we see gut reactions like fear or distaste to a simple poster, we have to wonder how much power these media really exert.
