The current political arena, meaning the way we elect our prsidents, is an indication of the flaws we have in our political system. In this lens I would like to discuss some of the things that we can collectively work on in order to modify the way we select and monitor our leaders.

Bipartisan equals weakness

How many supporting legs are needed for stability?

Think about it, it takes three strong legs for something to be solidly grounded. Two legs are weak because there is no true accountability and no real stability. It creates polarity, confusion and instability.

For years we have been swinging from side to side in our direction as a nation, like a pendulum, when we should be on a forward motion with purposeful advancement.

Now we keep slapping ourselves around and that way are causing our country to lose ground in the competitive world arena.

We must see ourselves as an item, which we are, we are a union of states, a country. We are the United States of America. So as a unit, we have been changing our minds every four or eight years as to what direction we want to go in.

We keep making turns, tolerating inefficiency, wastefulness and mistakes. On top of that we are not holding ourselves or anyone responsible for severe actions and severe losses.

What we ought to be doing, is to find more sets of solutions, which will in themselves have more things in common, so that we can select a more agreeable direction and actually move towards a goal or set of goals.

One viable and necessary solution

One of the best things we could do as a nation is to strengthen a third party; it would be better if it were a third and a fourth party. This would make people pay much closer attention and would create a healthier competition within our system.

We would have more than just two barely acceptable candidates because all the candidates would have to compete for each vote. Now, with only two parties with any say and two candidates at stake, the voter tends to go with the one who has not been in office screwing up for the last few years.

This would actually promote real leadership with real solutions, instead of the usual:
"hey, the other guys have made a mess so vote for us".

Let us ask ourselves what we mean by "they". It is "us" whom we need to hold accountable, the american citizens. That includes those who do not vote and the ones who vote for the parties that do not get chosen.

If we were to have a strong third party, we would have a large portion of the electorate occupy more of a middle ground. This would, in turn, encourage more debates, debates that are more fair because they would include all parties in contention (not just two) and more quality discussions of what our country would benefit from.

That way, we could draw those who are extremely polarized to come closer and discuss commonalities and develop agreeable solutions to our challenges and simultaneously keep the nation on a more commonly accepted direction.

What presidential debate?

Our current debates are a farse, a joke and an insult.

If it were to be accurate, it should be called the Republican and Democratic debate instead of the presidential debate.

There are only two candidates invited, the rest are forced to sit out and be ignored. Even if they are the ones with the better set of proposed solutions. Does that make any sense? of course not, much less in as important a country as the USA.

The reason is simply fear. In this past presidential election (2008) the American People did not get to hear from experienced and intelligent candidates that were proposing actual solutions to some of our most pressing issues.

To some it may be a joke, but Mr. Nader would have turned the heat up in this election and would have brought the "wow" factor into our homes. Not necessarily to win, but to inspire thought and discussion. Unfortunately that chance was missed.

I encourage all to look into Mr. Nader's proposed solutions. They can be found on YouTube. Hopefully we can look forward to someone of his caliber next time around.

Conclusion

Change is coming! I am almost certain that in the next election we will have more attention being paid to alternate points of view.

In tis past election we had record numbers of voters and many of them were young, fresh thinking people. That is awesome. I am absolutely proud of the outcome of this election (2008). I feel the our president elect, Barack Obama is an excellent choice and will bring new hope to our great nation.

None the less, we do have to pay close attention to future elections, starting with the number of parties that are permitted to participate in debates and fair campaigning.

Let us all make the effort to research all candidates and their perspectives, so that we can be better informed. That is the only responsible way to vote.
