This lens is about the pressing comb

This is a lens about pressing combs. A pressing comb is a heated styling appliance, used mainly by African American women, to temporarily straighten textured hair.

Madame C.J. Walker was America's first female African American millionaire. She made her money inventing and selling beauty products to African American women. She also showed them how to use a heated metal comb with her hair care products.

Walter Sammons, an African American, improved on the heated metal comb with his patented device. In 1920 he received a US Patent for a metal comb with a thermometer and an insulated handle.

A pressing comb with a thermometer and an insulated handle

Walter Sammons patented a temperature controlled pressing comb in 1920. The image above is from his patent application. It shows that his comb included a thermometer, so that the heat applied to the hair could be regulated, and an insulated handle, to protect the user from burning their hands.
