Preston and Steve Rock 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

The Preston and Steve show airs on WMMR 93.3 in Philadelphia, Pa. The show "officially" runs Monday-Friday from 6am to 10:30am, but regularly runs over that time. Joining Preston and Steve in studio are Nick, Casey, and Kathy and sometimes Marisa.

The best way to describe the show is well, if you like to laugh, then you will like the show. The show caters to men and women of all ages and backgrounds.

The best thing about the show is that Preston, Steve, Kathy, Casey, Nick and Marisa are all just like you and me. They aren't above us or think they are better than their listeners. Well, maybe Kathy does ;)

They involve the listeners through phone calls and events just for them, trying to better the listeners lives. And they do. There is a good chance that while you are driving (err sitting) in traffic commuting to work, the person in the car next to you that is laughing is also listening to the show. Their popularity is also evident with the Preston and Steve bumper stickers on cars as well as Gadzooks! Stickers.

Preston and Steve History

It all began as the Preston, Marilyn, and Steve show on WPLY 100.3 back in the late 1990's. There we some classic bits from this period. Some that come to mind include: Preston eating breakfast off of a toilet seat to prove to Marilyn that it was clean enough to do so; Preston shaving his privates; the "Survivor" contest in which the contestants were stuck in an RV all day long with Survivor: Eye of the Tiger blasting through the speakers in a continuous loop; and of course, the birth of Preston's first born.

In 2002 Marilyn left the show for family reasons and Preston and Steve carried on without her. After a long search, they eventually landed Kathy Romano to replace Marilyn.

In February of 2005, Y100 had its format flipped from Alternative Rock to Hip-Hop. As a result, all the staff at the now former Y100 were let go. WMMR stepped in and signed Preston and Steve; however the two could not begin at their new home due to a non-compete clause. After a few months of legal battles, the show returned to the air on 93.3 in May 2005.

Over the years, the morning show has won numerous awards and accolades, and has continuously been at the top of the chart demographics.

Cast of Characters

Preston Elliot

(Stolen directly from their website)

Well, it's about damn time I update this thing and I still suck at doing this! Anyhow, here's the skinny on me: I'm originally from the St. Louis area and got started in radio after I found out that 'rockstardom' was not what I was destined for in this world. After a few years of playing drums in cover bands I stumbled into a a broadcasting school and found my true calling (along with my 'need to eat pizza!'). Upon the rounds I made my way through a few towns and music formats when I eventually found myself in Philadelphia at a station some may remember called WDRE. I had an AWESOME time at that station but I had arrived at its twilight. A mere one year into my job the station had a high bid buyer step in, purchase the station and change the format. Fortunately there was work across the street at Y100. My good friend and mentor Jim McGuinn had just secured the Program Director position there and brought me over for the afternoon position. That lasted for about a year when I was approached to take over the morning position. Having never done mornings before I said 'no way'. I had no desire (and still don't) to get up at 4am everyday! However I was approached again a few months later with an offer I couldn't refuse and said 'what the hell, I'll give it a try'. At first it was me and my good friend Marilyn Russell. After a few weeks we knew we needed more and fortunately Steve Morrison was available. With Caseyboy as as our producer, we were underway. A few years and personel changes later, Y100 had the axe drop on it and we made the move to WMMR courtesy of man about town, Bill Weston.

My personal life is consumed by the greatest thing in my life - my family. A wife, two sons, and a daughter... amazing. Other than that I like to play golf, train in Krav Maga and throw back a few cold ones from time to time.

Steve Morrison

(Again, right from their website)

"Kill it! Dear God! I beg you! Kill it now before it kills us all!!!" - Gene Morrison - Steve's father - upon seeing his newborn son. Okay, I will be the first to admit I got off to a shaky start in life. I somehow managed to force my way through a spermicide soaked condom, a diaphragm, a birth control pill and a Nerf football to be conceived. Try as I might, I could never quite shake the notion that I was an accident (this is given substantial credence by my middle name which is Wasanaccident)

As a young lad, I remember being drawn to the magic of radio. How, I wondered, did they fit those people into that tiny box. Did they cut their arms and legs off and then crush their torsos and heads in some sort of industrial equipment? But what about the certain brain damage that would result from this? Well, maybe they surgically removed the parts of their brains that controlled their recently removed appendages reducing them to only the parts in direct control of speech? But wait, how could there possibly be enough air to flow past the vocal cords, if the lungs and throats were pulverized into a pulpy red goo? Oh the strange and delightful things children think, right?

Anyway, the attraction of radio never faded in my mind, always calling to me like that neighbor in the tire swing who keeps inviting me to look at the port wine stain on his penis. Eventually, I yielded to it's seductive charm even going so far as to give up a lucrative yet undemanding job as a dialogue coach to a mime troupe. Yes, the radio bug bit me and I was hooked...after the initial swelling went down and the trace amounts of blood disappeared from my stool.

Long story short, I have been in the radio industry for over sixteen years doing everything from comedy commercial production for WDRE in New York and Philadelphia to working on morning shows at Q104, Y100 and my new home on WMMR. I could not be happier to have this job working with Preston, Casey, Kathy and Nick and I thank you for making us a part of your mornings (remember, if you weren't listening to us, we would all be eating govt. cheese and Kathy would have to go back to hooking).

Casey Foster

(You guessed, right from their website.)

I fear that if I try to write something really witty & funny, I might just sound like a jackass as a result. So... I will just go ahead with a straight up bio. Just about 33 years ago, I was welcomed into this world by my loving parents, David & JoAnn. I spent my wonderful childhood in the town of Rutledge, PA, with my sister Jodi and brothers Dave & Kevin. Much of my adolescence was spent playing sports, getting dirty, chasing girls and hiding the fact that I was a bed wetter. I entered high school at Cardinal O'Hara where I graduated in the top 99% of my class in 1993. The next stage of my life was spent at Ursinus College in Collegeville, where I studied communications and was reintroduced to my favorite pastime... bed wetting. Upon graduation in 1997, with no recollection of what I had been taught, I stumbled into the real world. After a few months of stumbling and bumbling, I fell right into the arms of radio. A lot of things have happened since 1997 -too much to talk about - but I do have to say that I feel sooooo lucky to be a part of the Philly radio community. After my first 8 years in radio I landed here at WMMR, along with Preston & Steve, Kathy, Nick, and Marisa and couldn't be happier. Actually that is a figure of speech, I could be a lot happier, but you get the point...

Oh, yeah. Iin 2000 I met the love of my life... and 2 months after that I met my wife, Diane. We have been married since October of 2003 and currently live in Delco with our children Casey (our daughter) & Seamus (our son) and Avery (our baby girl). We also have two loving cats, Suzy & Fred. They are loving in the sense that they LOVE to piss on the floor outside the litter box.

Likes: My Wife, Mommy, Daddy, Brothers, Sister, Sisters-In-Law, Brother-In-Law, Riding Lawnmowers, Wheat Beer, Boobs, Burger King Double Cheeseburgers, People Dumber than Me, Imperial Pizza, Mustaches, Corn on the Cob, Sleep, Painkillers, Cumming, My Neighbors, American Cheese, The Dollar Tree, Last Stand Hot Dogs & Hot Sausages, Farts, Trash Trucks, E-A-G-L-E-S Chants at Phillies Games, The Sun, Having Exact Change, Porn, Untangling Knots, The Sound of Matt Cord Saying 'Andre Iguodala', Chewbacca, Pedicures, Puppies, and a whole lot more...

Kathy Romano

(Hmmm, wonder where this is from?)

I joined the Preston and Steve show at Y100 in November of 2003. The show then moved to our new home at WMMR in 2005! Preston & Steve discovered me and my tremendous amount of talent doing traffic for NBC-10. HA!!!!!! They mentioned me on the air, I called them, and now they're stuck with me!
Also, I am currently working with Comcast Sportsnet as a roving reporter. My feature 'Roamin' with Romano' can be seen during Eagles Pre and Post Game Live Hosted by Michael Barkann and featuring Governor Ed Rendell, Ray Didinger and Vaughn Hebron. I also reported on Monday Night Live hosted by Ron Burke and Ike Reese!
If you're wondering where I learned to salsa dance and make quesadillas, it was in Barcelona, Spain where I was born. Actually, I was born in Merrick, New York. I learned to salsa dance at a dance studio and I can't really make quesadillas. But I do own a quesadilla maker. Its red! I can't cook AT ALL! Its a damn shame. But salsa dancing is one of my favorite things to do!

Thank you to the listeners. I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!!!!

Nick McIlwain

(This one I borrowed from the website!)

I joined the Preston & Steve show back in September of 2004 and have quickly risen to superstar status. Or not. It doesn't matter. What does matter is that I love working with this show and am proud that it really is the best morning show in Philadelphia. After working for Pierre Robert at 'MMR for 3 years, I felt privileged and lucky to leave one program that I loved and join the morning show I have listened to and laughed with for years. Also, I get to sit next to Kathy Romano every day and stare at her when she's not looking.

Here's a little bit about me: I was born and raised in this area and my parents still live in Paoli. I graduated from Conestoga High School and somehow got into and graduated from Bucknell University in just a shade under a decade. To borrow a line, a lot of people go to college for 7 years. They're called doctors.

I now live in Valley Forge and even found someone smart enough to marry me for my money. We have a son, Benjamin, who was born in September 2006 and is already smarter than me.

Marisa Magnatta

(From their website....)

I started working mornings at 'MMR in 2003 (and by "working" I mean hanging around doing stuff for free). When The Preston and Steve Show joined the radio station, the boss suggested I "temporarily" help the show "transition", but after a couple months of refusing to leave everyone realized their lives could not go on without me because they loved me so much and I became the official 6th member of the show - and that's how I saved Christmas.

The personal rundown: I was born in Cherry Hill, grew up on the main line and now live in Manayunk. I love The Food Network, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob Dylan and the Foo Fighters. I also love Hoegaarden, Francis Ford Coppola Pinot Grigio and Almond Joys. I sleep a lot, shop too much and drive way too fast. I thank my dad everyday for his Eagles season tickets, and will go to a Phillies or Flyers game any day! My birthday is August 21st and I love presents.

My biggest regret in life is not going on stage when Mike Love called me down the aisle at a Beach Boys concert; I was 10 but could have been the next Courtney Cox. I hate rude and crude people - so hold the door and cover your mouth when you cough, please. I wish that I could draw, play the guitar, be witty, had bigger boobs and could write a better bio.

Show Highlights

There are a lot of things that Preston and Steve do that makes their listeners laugh and be entertained. However there are a few stunts they have and continue to pull that we look forward to each year.

The Vag Launch

Once a year the show launches a blow up sex doll equipped with balloons from the roof of a building. The doll is filled with a prize and many people try to catch it. The goal here is for the balloon to slowly release the helium, bringing the doll slowly down to earth. Unfortunately, either the doll drops like a rock, or it floats off for miles and miles, and sometimes, into other states. (Once it even entered the air space of the Philadelphia Airport.)

Painfully Single Mixers

A few times a year, the gang holds a "Painfully Single Mixer" at a local bar around the greater Philadelphia area. These events are set up with roughly equal number of men and women. The goal is to help singles meet the love of their life, or night. The event is filled with icebreaker games that are used to help people warm up to each other. And if you are a little shy, you can tell them who you are interested in and they will strike up a conversation for you.

There have been a handful of marriages and babies from these events over the years, as well as the occasional hookup.

Camp Out For Hunger

For several years the show has held an annual "Camp Out For Hunger", in which both Preston and Steve live in a motor home for one week in December to raise food for the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank. The show awards prizes to individuals and groups that donate the most food. Since 1998, the event has raised hundreds of tons to feed the hungry around Philadelphia. Check out below for yearly totals.

Drunk Day 2009

Double Dare Themed Drunk Day

Also known as their "Public Service Announcement", this annual tradition typically occurs on the last weekday before the 4th of July weekend. In 2004, Kathy got drunk live on the air, a show which has been cited as a favorite of the cast and crew as well as listeners. In subsequent years, Casey (2005) and Nick (2006) joined Kathy. Nick and Marissa replaced Kathy, who declined to participate in 2007. Typically a state trooper is present in studio to administer sobriety tests while Preston and Steve 'administer' their own forms of sobriety tests. Drunk Day 2008 was aired on Thursday, July 3, 2008. Nick and Casey participated, and it was "Double Dare" themed, complete with host Marc Summers. This show is generally regarded by fans as being one of the most successful and funny Drunk Day shows. Drunk Day 2009, aired on Thursday, July 2, 2009, was the first to feature non-cast members; the participants were Miss FHM 2005 and frequent guest Lauren Harris and Philadelphia Eagles fullback and show intern Kyle Eckel. Nick took part in his fourth Drunk Day on Friday, July 2, 2010, with peppy show intern Julie (a petite, energetic former Philadelphia 76ers dancer) as his partner in drinking. Fan reaction to the 2010 Drunk Day was mixed, with many commenting that it was bland and underwhelming given the energy level of previous years.

Science Day

Science Day is probably one of the greatest days on e the show (especially for me). The guys love science but don't understand a lick of it. So, they get an expert in and conduct cool experiments. They try to do experiments that you can enjoy even though you cannot "see" over the radio. Luckily though they do record the events, and post them to their website so you can see the experiments in action.

Cardboard Classic

Each winter, Preston and Steve head up to the Poconos for the entertaining Cardboard Classic. There are strict rules as to how you can build you cardboard sled, all of which can be found on the Preston and Steve website. After all the sleds make their run, an awesome bon fire is then made with all of the sled remnants.

A pre-highlight to the actual event is the traffic report the morning of the event. It is inevitable that traffic on the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike will be slowed because of falling cardboard debris on the road!

Gadzooks Blanc was officially unveiled at Preston & Steve's Cardboard Classic during MMR's Day Off on the Slopes on February 29, 2008

Guatemalan Ripple
Developed by Preston & Steve, Guatemalan Ripple is a Guatemalan-sourced coffee ice cream with mocha fudge ripple, blended with mini-coffee filled chocolates. It was officially introduced on July 28, 2010 when the Cooking Channel's Ice Cream Truck rolled into Philadelphia to give away free samples of Guatemalan Ripple

Tattoosday!

Click The Pic to see People's Tattoo's!It all started one fateful morning in 2006. Preston and Steve were kicking off Month of Stunts by tattooing Intern Joe's taint. That segment produced comedy and radio gold! A listener called in and explained that he had a tattoo that he needed covered up because his girlfriend disapproved of it. He came in and got his free tattoo.

Then the flood gates opened. Ever since, listeners have been coming in on Tuesday mornings to get their tattoos. As of this writing, I do not know how long the wait list is, but last I heard it, if you called in today, you would be scheduled for months in advance.

Click on the picture to be taken to a gallery of all of the great tattoo's listeners have received over the years!
