Pretzel Rods Kids Decorating = FUN!

Almost everybody loves pretzels. Combine that with chocolate and you have an instant favorite. What could be more fun after school or on a rainy day than dunking and decorating pretzel rods?

When my daughter was younger, that's exactly what we did, more often than not. It's fun, easy, creative and something kids can really get into. She is a senior now, but we still decorate pretzel rods. She takes them to school for French Club, basketball practice, golf practice, chem class and for just about any other reason she can think of. She is a kid at heart and loves her decorated pretzel rods!

They make wonderful after school snacks, team snacks, birthday snacks and more! And, because most kitchens already have the ingredients needed, they take little time and anyone can do it, this is a wonderful kid friendly recipe/project. Let's get started!

(I love food and recipes that I can decorate. It's the best of both worlds!)

(P.S. The photo on the left is the faced pretzel rod my daughter made tonight.)

Ingredients and Supplies needed for

Decorating Pretzel Rods

1- 12 oz package of semi-sweet chocolate chips
1- package white chocolate bark or chips
1- tbsp oil or shortening
assorted sprinkles, candies, nuts, coconut etc...
Wax paper
Microwave safe bowl
Pretzel Rods

Dump your bag of chocolate chips into the bowl and add the oil/shortening. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Take out and stir vigorously. As you stir more of the chips will melt and you may not need any more microwave time. If some of the chips have not yet melted, put the back in the microwave for only 20 secs. Burnt chocolate is not good...

It should look smooth and creamy - delish!

Dunking is the fun part!

I think the dunking of the rods is the part Haley likes the best, followed closely by decorating them with candy, nuts and sprinkles.

Simply dunk one end of the pretzel rod into the bowl and use a spoon to dip and drop more chocolate onto the rod until as much as you want is covered. I usually shoot for between 1/2 and 2/3 of the rod being covered.

Lay the completed rod on a wax paper covered cookie sheet. Dip rods until the sheet is full. Then begin decorating with your assorted candies, nuts, and whatever else you like! Leave to dry/harden on the wax paper.

That's it. Quick and easy!

Tip

Less is more when it comes to the amount of oil/shortening you add to the chocolate chips. Too much and the chocolate takes days and days to dry or harden!

I can't believe it, you made me pick just one favorite! I am furious at you! Way back in those olden days, I made decorated hostess chocolates with little molds and everything. I actually got quite good at it. Now, I will be expecting a great collection of chocolate dipped pretzel rods from you this Christmas!

These all look so yummy. I have never done this before but my sister (the good daughter) does it every year for Christmas.

What wonderful fun! These would satisfy that sweet to salty thing we do and keep us out of the serious calories!

I have never done this, but I will be this Christmas. Again, a great idea for gifts. Who wouldn't love a batch of these wrapped in pretty cellophane in a pretty homemade box??? Ohhhh...what an excellent article. LOVE it.

Never thought of doing this...but what a great and fun idea. I might have to do this for an upcoming football game snack idea.
