A Tale of Perfect Love

The Princess Bride is the fairy tale story of the romance of Buttercup and her childhood sweetheart Westley. Just as with most fairy tales, the road to true love is not an easy one. When Buttercup rebuffs Westley affection for her, he decides to leave home on sail on the seas, where he is captured by the Dread Pirate Roberts. As Roberts is about to kill Westley, Westley tells him of his true love, which moves Roberts to spare Westley's life.

The Dread Pirate Roberts isn't just one man...

So, the Roberts we know isn't actually the real pirate scoundrel. Apparently, when the pirate with that name wants to retire, he passes the name on to another pirate. So, Westley was chosen as the replacement. He learned fencing and all sorts of other pirate things, which he will need to take over as the new Dread Pirate Roberts.

The evil prince is enchanted with the beautiful Buttercup, and proposes to her. His real plan, though, is to kill her and then accuse a neighboring country of the deed, thereby starting a war. For this reason, the evil prince has Buttercup abducted by his cronies before the wedding, while she ponders what happened to the man she really loves.

The Evil Prince's Plot

Princess Bride Movie PosterThe henchmen, under the leadership of Vizzini (a self-proclaimed genius), transport Buttercup to the Guilder border. Once at sea they discover they are being trailed by a mysterious ship. Once they reach the shore they climb the steep cliffs to escape, but find themselves again being trailed by a mysterious stranger from the mystery ship with amazing strength and persistence.

When they get to the crest of the precipice, Vizzini instructs the giant Fezzik to squash him with the falling boulders. When that doesn't work, Vizzini tells his swordsman, Inigo Montoya to wait for the stranger to arrive and then kill him. Inigo and the stranger engage in a duel and demonstrate their incredible fencing abilities. Inigo and the stranger then profess their mutual respect and the stranger triumphs in the duel by rendering Inigo unconscious instead of killing him. This swordfight is called one of the top fencing scenes in movie history.

Continuing his pursuit of Buttercup and her captors, the stranger catches up to Vizzini, who attempts to poison him. The stranger, who has built up his immunity to poisons, survives. Vizzini does not, and Buttercup is left alone with the stranger. As they travel together, Buttercup calls him a coward for hiding his face and compares him unfavorably to her true love Westley -- until she realizes he is her beloved Westley.

The evil Prince Humperdick appears just as they are reuniting. At this point Buttercup is taken back to the palace in preparation for her marriage, while Westley is taken secretly down into the dungeon and severely tortured, until he is nearly dead. Thankfully, he is not completely destroyed by this torture, and is able to be revived by magic. Once this is done, he joins forces with Inigo and Fezzik, and heroically saves the Princess Bride from her evil fiance.

The original book The Princess Bride was not nearly as optimistic as the movie. In fact, the author is downright cynical in the whole idea of the "live happily every after" ending. Rather than the Disney-esque "storybook" ending, he goes for the Brothers Grimm type of cynical view of what would *really* happen.

The movie was actually mostly from the book, they just chose an alternate ending for it all!
