How I learned about the delicious prickly pear

Prickly pear: the cactus fruit that is nutritious and delicious

We have a Korean grocery store near us that often has unfamiliar fruits and veggies. My husband brought me home a few prickly pears to try, just for fun, one day. I wasn't sure what to do with them so they ended up sitting on the counter for about a week. I finally got my lazy self to do something with them because they had gotten soft. I decided I would make it into a drink! It was a delicious drink! A colorful drink! A prickly pear drink!

What to mix together

I like to add honey to the drink and taste as I go to make sure it's how I want, and I add lemon (to taste) as well. Below are some suggestions on what to add with the prickly pear that can thicken it up (ice cream or yogurt), add more nutrients and flavor (other fruits, protein powder), or add a dash of something different (lemon). I wouldn't suggest adding everything in this list together into one drink. It might not turn out well for you.
  • honey
  • sugar
  • yogurt
  • ice cream (shhh)
  • mangoes
  • strawberries
  • kiwi
  • lemon
  • your favorite protein powder

Food Mills!

one of the coolest kitchen gadgets ever: separate out seeds or other small pieces

My husband makes amazing pasta sauce. We grow our own tomatoes and would normally have to take seeds out ourselves, but my husband knew about food mills. My own disclaimer is that I never paid any attention to these things even though I was raised in the south and my family all know about food mills. But I have had some fun with this thing too. It's amazing! We have the OXO brand, and it's very sturdy. To make my prickly pear drink, I cut up the fruit and put it in the food mill. Cranked the handle and voila! seeds are separated from the delicious fruit pulp!

Growing your own cacti

prickly and rooty

type=textThe cactus is easy to propagate. My father in law's cacti will get too heavy, a piece will fall off or over, and will tumble down the steep flower bed. Wherever it stops, it ends up rooting in place! So you can clip a piece from a friend, get one and put clippings in a bed, and grow your own fruit. It's a very pretty plant in big beds and would be a unique addition to your home for curb appeal or just for you to admire in your own yard.

Taking care of cacti plants

a perennial succulent

type=textTo propagate the cactus plant, just plant part of the green "pad" about an inch deep in the ground. Put something next to it to keep it upright if you need to. It'll grow roots. From seed is not as easy, but still fairly easy. Just spread them around a shady bed and keep them moist until they germinate (sprout).

The prickly pear cactus is hardy in zones 08a to 10a (find your hardiness zone by zip code here). That doesn't mean they can't be in other zones. Those are just the best conditions naturally for them. I know two people in a Zone 6 area and Zone 7 area that has them and they do beautifully.

It needs well-drained soil, so add some rocks or sand to your top soil where you plant them if your drainage isn't good. Or, you could make your garden into a desert oasis! The cactus can take the dry soil, but most weeds can't ;) According to a gardener at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens in Wyoming, these cacti prefer about 1/3 coarse gravel, 1/3 sand and 1/3 topsoil (1).

MightApparently you can eat the pads as well. I'm interested in trying this!

The pads can be a good food for livestock (2; 3).

Blenders

tied for most useful kitchen gadget with the crock pot

You don't need a food mill to make an acceptable smoothie from prickly pears. If you don't care about the seeds that much, just use a blender!
