The year began as a period of financial instability and uncertainty. In February 2009, my stepmother fell into tough times with her job, the first sign the economy was beginning to decay. As a real estate developer, her employment has all but disappeared in early 2009. Forced to cut back on expenses, she informed me that I would henceforth be paying for my own car insurance. Hardly cause for alarm until I saw the numbers involved. Because I was making payments on the vehicle, I was required to have full coverage, an amount that totaled $800 every six months. What?! I quickly realized that my current income didn't even cover half of that amount. Her instructions were clear and direct, "Get another job." Sounds easy enough and under normal circumstances would not be a problem. I sent several job applications out around town. I remained optimistic until March came and with it, the announcement of the collapse of the economy. Suddenly jobs that were once easy to obtain quickly grew scarce. At my current place of employment, the application stack grew to a pile and then to an entire box. It became apparent that my situation had become dire.

Realizing that a second job would likely be months away, I had little recourse but to look to my possessions to sustain my baseline for the time being. With a heavy heart, I put several collectables, some cloths and electronics on eBay. I dug deeper into my closet and discovered the props and costumes that had accumulated from various student films and theater productions over the years. There were some vintage 50's dresses, an antique iron wrench, and a pair of Ruby Slippers all gathering dust. Purchased for my first student film "The Riveter", the dresses were going to be an easy sell. The Ruby Slippers I wasn't too sure about. They were handmade by me for a one-night performance I was involved with a year earlier and were far from quality. I put them up anyway given my desperation but was fully prepared in wasting both time and money on them.

After a week the dresses sold as expected. As I checked my email before going to class, I noticed that someone had posted a question about the Ruby Slippers. I was intrigued considering that interest in them was meager at best. Perhaps they would sell after all. The lady had informed me that her daughter had played Dorothy in a high school production of the Wizard of Oz and that she was looking for a keepsake to give her as a graduation gift. As the Slippers I was selling were too big, the lady asked if I would make her a smaller to give to her daughter. "I would be more than happy to pay you." She wrote. I became intrigued, any little bit would help right now. I inquired about the price, expecting nothing more than $40. Her response was anything but. "I will gladly pay you $100." She replied. $100!?!? After pinching myself to make sure this wasn't some dream, I eagerly responded. "Deal!"

I quickly dug through my craft drawer and found the sequin roll I had purchased for the original pair. Purchasing some rhinestones from the craft store I begin assembling a pair of size 7 Ruby Slippers. As I painstakingly glued one strand at a time into the pumps I had what can best be described as a "lightbulb" moment. What if I started selling these full time? Researching on eBay, I discovered many people were selling homemade replica movie props and costumes but nobody was selling Custom Sequin Shoes.

Working over the weekend I finished the size 7s and proceeded to take photos of them from every possible angle. After writing a general description, and using the photos of the new pair, I set up a new listing as Made to Order, set the quantity to four and the price at $99.99, I held my breath and prayed. After one week, all four sold!

As if an enormous weight had been lifted from my shoulders, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I ran a second listing, same amount and price and within a week three of the four sold.
