Is commercial printing equipment a long-term investment?

Undoubtedly, commercial printing equipment is a long-term investment. Machines will often payback their value to multiple owners over their lifetime. It's not uncommon for equipment to change ownership two-three times over 30 years. One of the most pronounced 'migrations' of American printing equipment has been to Latin and South America. With equipment changing hands several times and even been exported during its life-cycle, there are hundreds of equipment brokers and dealers throughout the world who help businesses trade-out their equipment.

Small to medium sized print shops will use a printing equipment broker to upgrade. The equipment broker will find newer more capable printing press for the print shop and sell their existing press to another firm at the same time. This common practice often means that equipment brokers have little or no equipment in inventory. However there are a few major equipment dealers who will purchase and build up an inventory of choice used equipment. For the small to medium sized printer this means there are hundreds of sources for previously enjoyed printing equipment.

Current Market for Commercial Printing Equipment

Summer Outlook

The American commercial printing industry is currently experiencing a significant dry spell. Many printing firms have closed plants, downsized their labor pool, or gone out of business in the spring 2009. As a result there are a large number of liquidation sales and court ordered auctions of equipment. For those printing businesses with steady work and some cash on hand, expanding production offerings or increasing capacity is extremely affordable. With more auction houses planning, it would be reasonable to expect this trend to continue.

Additionally it would be reasonable to expect good deals on printing equipment for sale from traditional sources. Dealers and manufactures will likely be bringing extra sharp pencils on sales calls, however financing and credit will be difficult for printing operations experience a significant slowing in print orders.
