Printmaking Materials
- ImagOn%u2122 (DuPont)
- Dupont ImagOn%u2122 Ultra A UV light sensitive photopolymer film used for Intaglio Printmaking as a safer, non-toxic alternative to traditional chemical etching. It consists of three layers: a shiny Mylar® coversheet, photoreactive dry film, and a clear polyolefin coversheet. Used in conjunction with conventional etching presses and traditional etching inks, ImagOn%u2122 helps you achieve the highest quality intaglio prints safety and economically.
Designed to adhere to a copper plate creating a photo intaglio plate. The film / printmaking plate is then exposed to U. V. light and developed with soda ash and water. The film may be removed from the copper plate after printing and the copper plate may be reused.
An exposure system and vacuum frame are required to process correctly.
ImagON film may be cut to custom size using a razor knife. - Photoresist
- Photoresist is a light-sensitive chemical substance that is used to form a coating on a surface or substrate. This coating can then be exposed to a specific band of light, referred to as the photoresist's action spectrum, to affect a desired change in the photoresist. This change causes the photoresist to either become soluble or insoluble to another chemical called the developer which will be washed over the photoresist. Once developed, the photoresist that has been exposed to light in the action spectrum either remains or is washed away leaving a pattern that can then be used for further processing such as chemical etching, engraving, or lithography.
- Pronto Plate
- The least expensive, most efficient and environmentally friendly way to go direct to plate for the small, offset printing industry. Pronto-Plates are also used in the revolutionary method, developed by Prof. George Roberts/Boise State University, for non-toxic fine art lithography printmaking.
- Resingrave
- * Low cost alternative to boxwood for wood engraving
* Converts to intaglio printmaking by simple polishing
* Use steel gravers for crisp line and rotary bits for soft graded tone
* A user-friendly, non-etch engraving medium with an incredibly wide range of expression - Silk Cut Linoleum
- Silk Cut linoleum is a highly responsive medium that enables the artist to create beautiful prints. It is made from 6 ingredients: linseed oil, rosin, wood flour, limestone and cork, which are mixed and then pressed onto a backing of natural jute, and then allowed to cure. All of these ingredients are made from ecologically friendly renewable raw materials. Every aspect, from harvesting raw materials through to the return to nature of the finished product, meets stringent environmentally-conscious standards. The natural raw materials that make up Silk Cut linoleum are harvested from sustainable crops, and at the end of its life it can be safely added to landfill refuse sites, where natural decomposition takes place.
- Solarplate
- Solarplate is a light sensitized steel backed polymer material used by artists as an alternative to hazardous printing techniques. It is a simple, safer and faster approach than traditional etching and relief printing. It does not use grounds, acids or solvents. It is exposed with U.V. light (the sun) and developed with ordinary tap water. It may be done by working on the plate directly, with opaque materials in the form of on-water based pigments, or. it may be utilized by exposing the plate through a transparent film with artwork on it. The film may be created by drawing on acetate, photocopying or scanning and printing on film, or darkroom techniques with Kodalith. A positive transparency is for printing as an etching; a negative transparency is for printing a relief impression. Water dissolves the unexposed portions of the plate. Either in large bold areas or tonal ranges equivalent to a 40 micron dot or finer.

Working in harmony with the artist's imagination these tools will bring years of enjoyment and satisfaction.
Along with our extensive line of Printmaking tools you'll also find sharpening stones, sharpening fixtures, books, and a tool sharpening service. - Ettan Press
- US - Ettan presses combine contemporary design with advanced technology. Traditional press design resorts to overuse of steel. Ettan, in contrast, combines special alloys, aircraft bearings superior to bushings, and innovative engineering to dissipate stress dynamically. We use alloys that are non-corroding, stronger than steel, and lightweight. Our upper rollers have a large diameter and an ellipsoid profile along the roller axis, giving an absolutely uniform pressure and smoothness during printing. Ettan presses are equipped with micrometric vernier scales to enable the printmaker, when reprinting a plate, to reset the upper roller exactly.
Ettan uses only high-quality face gears to achieve the high torque and smooth drive which cheap chain-drives cannot provide. For safety and appearance, our gear mechanism is completely enclosed.
Every metal plate has memory, and even the thickest steel bed will eventually warp. We use laminated phenolic resin (LPR) which, although more expensive, is superior to steel, durable and flexible, but has no memory. LPR is produced by imbedding thousands of lamels into a resin, later cured at high pressure and temperature. LPR is completely inert to organic solvents, and, unlike steel, does not corrode and will not warp, even with long use. - Fome Group - Fine Art Division

- Griffin Company
- US - Printing press manufacturer. Initially, we started making printing presses because most, if not all the companies, were located back east. At that time, the presses were very cumbersome and very heavy. We were one of the first companies to make a fabricated tubular framework. This type of framework is very strong, and at the same time lightweight. One of the things we were trying to do was to make a press that would be somewhat portable, and also make a machine that an artist could afford. We were successful in both points: our machines are somewhat portable as well as affordable for the artist. And in our 30th year, our creed is still "There is no substitute for Quality."
- Halepress
- Finland - Hale etching presses, intaglio presses, lithography presses for the graphic arts and for fine art printmaking. Manufacturing of the heavy duty professional printmaking equipment in Finland since 1980.
- Harry F Rochat Ltd.
- UK - Harry F Rochat Ltd was first formed in 1969 by Harry Rochat and his son Leon Rochat. They both had worked in a company in Kings Cross that had been making presses of many kinds since 1900. After the closure of this organisation, Harry and his son Leon decided to commence manufacturing high quality printing presses. They set about designing a range of presses in a manner in which they believed they should be made.
Their traditional engineering background gave them the belief that none of the machines should be fabricated and very firm views on materials, techniques, and design.
This is something which has been borne out in the presses design since 1969. As a result, side frames, gears, handwheels and iron rollers are all cast to our specific requirements. The castings are carried out by a family run foundry in Birmingham and machined and finished in our small factory in Barnet.
The company has now moved into the third generation and they in turn are committed to continue the production of the current range of printing equipment, with the ambition to add to this range. - Hawthorn Printmaker Supplies
- UK - Hawthorn Etching Presses: Designed and built in the UK by Hawthorn Printmakers. At present two sizes available. Both presses are driven by the lower roller through an enclosed gearbox. All rollers and drive shafts are on bearings and at a gear ratio of 4:1 giving a very smooth action. Two vernier gauges are fitted at each end of the top roller so that the printer can see and set both pressures very easily and accurately. The bed is made from a very hard sythetic material. The press is finished in Hawthorn Green powder coating which is very tough and long lasting.

I have sold presses to artists, schools, colleges, galleries, museums, as well as many of the countries print workshops. I started my engineering career in the coal mines. An apprenticeship forged in adversity and honed through necessity. An appenticeship that taught me integrity and respect. Considerations that are still very important to me today. Those early experiences programmed me to care, care about what I make, care how I make it and care what it looks like. That care is built into all my presses. With my gained knowledge and skills, I design

in reply to Liz I've tried to get non-US suppliers; if anyone knows of printmaking suppliers anywhere, please let me know, and I'll happily add them! There are definitely some Australian suppliers on here, have a look again, but yes, US & UK suppliers are the dominant available. :)

This is a great lens but as an Australian printmaker none of the US resources are of any use - US companies it seems cannot be bothered dealing with international customers! I've had too many frustrating and humiliating experiences trying to source materials and equipment from the US.
