Introduction to POD shops

POD means print on demand. A POD shop means that the shop will only produce something when someone place an order. For example, a t-shirt shop prints it t-shirts only when someone placed an order, or a bookshop that print a book when someone make a purchase.

We will concentrate on POD shops that print t-shirts and other goodies in this lens. The famous and popular ones online are Cafepress, Zazzle, Printfection and Spreadshirt.

Cafepress

Cafepress is highly recommended if you want to start your very own POD shop. The basic shop are free and you can create as many basic shop as you want. However, there are a lot of limitation with basic shops. You can only put in 1 type of product each in every basic shop and you cannot customize your shop to whatever you want. You can hardly go far if you stick to a basic shop.

For a premium shops, it will cost you
* USD$6.95 per month
* USD$18.45 for 3 months
* USD$34.95 for 6 months
* USD$59.95 for 1 year (only $5 per month!)
You will get your 15-day free trial period before Cafepress subscribe you to their premium shops. A premium shop will allow you to add as many products as you want but you can only create a maximum of 500 sections.

The good thing about Cafepress is that they have a very good and popular marketplace which helps to sell your products. However, your designs will be competing against millions or zillions of designs. You will only get 10% commission if your customer buy from their marketplace.

Zazzle

As for Zazzle, there is no basic or premium shop as they have only one type of shop which they call it gallery. The best thing is that you can create as many gallery as you like and they are all free. However, there are limitation to what you can do to a gallery. You can add as many products or designs you want to a gallery but you cannot customize most of the layout. Recently, Zazzle release their ??? which allow shopkeepers to customize their shop to whatever they want. You will need some coding knowledge if you wish to do that.

Another point to take note about Zazzle is that they have their own marketplace and they do help you to promote your designs.

Although you can create as many gallery as you want with just one email address, You will have to create one account for each gallery. You might end up with a lot of account to manage.

Printfection

Then there is Printfection. You can create as many shops as you want and they are all free. All the shops you created are in one account so it is easier for you to navigate around. If you wish to have more than 2 shops, you will have to email Printfection for permission. Customization is possible with Printfection shops but you will have to be good in CSS coding. Printfection has also open up their developer platform and API so that shopkeeper can create applications on top of the core Printfection service.
