This initiative to create a center for artists, the first of its kind: in our region, was paralleled, at the end of the 1970's, by many similar initiatives by our contemporaries throughout Quebec. Since then, this has lead to numerous beneficial effects on its members as well as on the community at large.
Our center has preserved its initial collective identity, the self-determined vision of its future and the programming of its day to day organization. Philagrafika builds upon the Philadelphia region's rich history and abundant artistic resources to increase critical dialogue, provide benefits for the local arts community, and enhance the city's presence as an international center for printmaking. We do this through an international contemporary art festival, an annual invitational portfolio, and special projects. Our programs have been designed to present new curatorial and critical models for printmaking-models in which the medium is presented as an integral component of current artistic practice. - Pittsburgh Print Group
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - The Pittsburgh Print Group is an artist guild affiliated with the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Founded in 1972, the Group's purpose is to support artists who are printmakers through exhibits, educational projects and other promotional activities. The Group is also committed to the advancement and promotion of the printmaking art throughout various educational and community-oriented activities.
We have approximately 55 artist members who work in Southwestern Pennsylvania and exhibit nationwide. The organization is governed by its own by-laws and is administered by a committee of elected officers and appointed chairpersons.
Printmaking is a diverse art form. Artists use a variety of techniques, including intaglio, lithography, relief, monoprint, collograph, embossing and combinations of mixed media to produce images, which are transferred to a medium such as paper or fabric. The group intentionally keeps the definition of a "print" non-specific, so that we may remain open to all present and future possibilities in printmaking.
The Print Group seeks to advance the art of printmaking by providing avenues for local printmakers to exhibit and sell their work throughout open exchange of ideas and technical information. Members regularly conduct demonstrations, give lectures, and produce literature explaining printmaking and its place in contemporary art. We also join with museums, art centers, schools and universities and galleries throughout the Pittsburgh region to produce educational programs covering the art and craft of printmaking. - Pratt Fine Art Center

We get great artists to participate by making beautiful editions of prints which are limited to the number of subscribers we currently have (greatly increasing the value and scarcity of the prints that people receive).
The Print Club has been in existence since 1934, and has an unbroken string of commissioned prints and successful shows. Many of the artists we commission are of international stature. - Society of American Graphic Artists
- New York, New York - SAGA or, the Society of American Graphic Artists represents a group of artist-printmakers each of whom is elected by a group of their peers. SAGA's goal is to promote printmaking as a fine art through juried exhibitions, to publish a newsletter of the professional activities and technical achievements of its members, and to produce special exhibitions focusing on the varied stylistic, thematic, and technical possibilities of prints.
Originally known as the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the group was founded in 1915 to advance the cause of etching which, due to its autographic and spontaneous nature of drawing onto a grounded copper plate, was perceived as more closely reflecting the artist's creative impulses. This placed etching in contrast to other printmaking techniques at that time, which were more closely associated with commercial processes and less creative application.
Acknowledging the need to recognize the wealth of artists outside of Brooklyn and New York, the Society organized an international show with great success in 1922 and in 1931 changed their name to the Society of American Etchers resulting in the geographical expansion of their membership.
By the 1940's additional printmaking techniques had gained respect and recognition as fine art. In the process of encompassing artists working in these various techniques, in 1947, the group again changed its name to the Society of American Etchers, Gravers, Lithographers, and Woodcutters. Shortly afterwards in 1952 the simpler, geographically, and technically inclusive name, the Society of American Graphic Artists was finally adopted. - Southern Graphics Council

Plus they gain from the opportunity to work with artist printmakers. The majority of schools re book every year encouraged by the higher grades achieved at GCSE, AVCE, AS and A2. The content can be adapted to suit all ability levels from the least able to gifted / talented students who need enrichment and extension.

As a not for profit organisation that is also a registered charity, EP receives approximately 50% of it's funding through revenue and project funding from the Scottish Arts Council as well as support from the City of Edinburgh Council. This enables the organisation to highly subsidise the cost of using the print studio, making access to creative facilities affordable to a wide range of people. - Dunfermline, Scotland - The Fife (Dunfermline) Print Workshop was formed in 1982 by a small group of artists including John Binning, Terry Keast, Ian Lindsay, Margaret Mathew, and Ann Smith.
We have charitable status; we lease the basement of the Dell Farquaharson Institute from Fife Council and within this area we provide etching, screenprinting, lithography and relief printing tuition and equipment to a membership from a huge variety of backgrounds, which encourages a lively mixture of approaches to the medium. No one style predominates and there is a great sense of achievement and exhilaration.
We feel that we have our own identity and priorities. The larger printmakers' workshops have paid technicians and administrators and run galleries, whilst we remain exclusively run by volunteers, have no gallery facilities and, very importantly, we do not have the big budgets and local authority/SAC support that these organisations require - but we do not have to submit to their conditions either.
We hold and participate in exhibitions throughout Scotland. Individual members contribute to galleries and exhibitions both national and international, many receiving recognition and awards for their work.
Our survival depends entirely on our own efforts. Yet we achieve much with our limited resources and operate very closely to the original ideals that gave birth to the Printmaking Workshop movement. Our aims are to promote the skills of printmaking in all its forms and to make our facilities available to all who may wish to acquire or practice those skills. - Gainsborough House Print Workshop

- Jerusalem Print Workshop
- Jerusalem, Israel - The Jerusalem Print Workshop, a non-profit organization founded in 1974, is an art center dedicated to the advancement of printmaking in Israel.
It is the largest and most important of its kind in the country. Its goal is to explore, along with the artists, the unlimited possibilities of printmaking, while preserving uncompromising criteria of quality of printing and materials, and upgrading standards of edition management, exhibition and commercial publishing.
The JPW, located in a spacious 19th century Ottoman building in the heart of Jerusalem, houses a workshop on its first floor and a gallery on the upper floor.
In keeping with our goals, we invite artists to work and create original art prints in collaboration with our highly skilled master printers. The artists are provided with the printmaking facilities - lithography, etching, woodcut and screenprinting - and all the guidance and advice they need.
The JPW also offers Open Studio facilities - at the moment only in etching - for artists who want to work independently, as well as courses in the various techniques for those who want to acquire skills in the media.
Our gallery stocks the largest print and artist's book collection in the country, representing a unique cross-section of Israeli art. The gallery holds exhibitions curated by either the JPW or by guest-curators.
The JPW's publications consist of limited, signed and numbered editions of prints and artist's books by guest artists. We also publish catalogues to accompany the exhibitions.

Such a studio will provide a place for artists to create work and pass on their skills to others in the community. Although established in Hobart it is intended that the studio cater for the needs of all Tasmanians interested in using its facilities or learning about this art form. To this end we have developed a program of workshops and exhibitions which will expose printmaking to the wider community and also provide an opportunity for artists to promote and sell their work.

The studio is equipped with excellent facilities and technical resources and is supported by a regular Artist in Residence / Guest Lecture program. Open Bite provides a professional working environment that enables not only the more traditional approaches of print production to be investigated but also the opportunity for those artists seeking to work more experimentally, challenging the accepted notions of printmaking through an involvement in large scale, multi media or electronic imaging. The overall philosophy within the studio sees printmaking as a major means of artistic expression without stylistic constraints toward content or medium, and therefore encourages artists to expose the full potential of printmaking as a creative process.
The studio also operates a professional print publishing program for artists. Open Bite has worked in collaboration with Desert Designs WA and Indiginart to offer access and publishing facilities for the production of limited edition prints by a number of indigenous arts communities across central and western Australia. A recently published article expands on one of these projects. - Singapore Tyler Print Institute

Letterpress Publishers
Letterpress, bookbinding, book arts publishers.
- Aardvark Letterpress
- Los Angeles, California - Unlike many "design studios," who are simply jobbers that farm out their printing work to others, Aardvark Letterpress is a true and classic printing business. All of the letterpress printing is performed onsite at Aardvark Letterpress by Luis, his sons Brooks and Cary, and their lead pressman, Oscar Gomez. Aardvark still has the old Chandler & Price, but has added two 10 x 15 Heidelberg windmill presses, a Miehle V-50 vertical press, and a Superior handpress.
Aardvark Letterpress is also unique in that, unlike most letterpress printers, Aardvark has full typesetting capabilities. As former typographers, Aardvark Letterpress still has its own fully operational Linotype machine, two Ludlow typesetting machines, and an extensive collection of hand-set type. Aardvark Letterpress has more than 200 typestyles that can be set "in house" and used in the letterpress job.
Aardvark Letterpress provides high-quality craftsmanship from a bygone era. Every job is unique and, to a large extent, handmade. Aardvark Letterpress maintains extremely high standards and works meticulously to ensure that every letterpress piece created is a true work of art. - Barbarian Press
- Mission, British Columbia - Established in 1977 in Kent, England, where the Elsteds worked with Graham Williams at the Florin Press. Having acquired three flatbed hand presses - an 1850 super royal Hopkinson & Cope Albion, an 1833 foolscap folio Barrett bench Albion, and an 1854 foolscap folio Sherwin & Cope Imperial - together with many cases of type, they returned to their native Canada in 1978 and set up shop in Mission, British Columbia, about 50 miles east of Vancouver in the Fraser Valley, where they remain. To the English hand presses they have added Vandercook Universal I and Universal III proofing presses, two Chandler & Price vertical platen presses, much more type, and a small hand bindery.

- Crown Point Press
- San Fransisco, California - Crown Point began in 1962 as a print workshop, but started publishing prints in 1965 with etching porfolios by Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. It functioned as both workshop and publisher until 1971 when Brown formed an alliance with the New York publisher, Parasol Press. In that year Crown Point Press moved from Brown's Berkeley basement to a loft space in downtown Oakland, and -through Parasol Press- began working with New York artists Sol LeWitt, Brice Marden, and others who would later be seen as key members of the Minimal art movement.
Oakland gallery.Oakland gallery. In 1977 Crown Point Press shifted its emphasis back to its own publishing program, and began working with a group of mainly Conceptual artists including Vito Acconci, Chris Burden, Tom Marioni, John Cage, and Pat Steir. Artists published by Crown Point since that time represent a wide variety of contemporary art approaches, and many of them live in countries other than the United States. Art historian Susan Tallman in her 1996 book, The Contemporary Print, describes Crown Point as "the most instrumental American printshop in the revival of etching as a medium of serious art." From 1982 through 1994 Crown Point added Asian woodcut techniques to its etching program, taking artists to Japan, and later China, to work with craftsmen in those countries.
Outside of the Folsom St. gallery.Outside of the Folsom St. gallery. Crown Point Press celebrated its 25th birthday with an exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art, and archives of its work are owned by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the National Gallery in Washington, DC. An exhibition jointly sponsored by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the National Gallery was held in 1997, Crown Point's 35th year. Since 1986 Crown Point Press has been located in San Francisco, where it has a gallery open to the public and two large etching studios. With a staff of twelve, the press currently publishes etchings by five or six invited artists a year. It also holds summer workshops open to all artists. - Deep Woods Press
- Mancelona, Michigan - Deep Wood Press has continued the tradition of hand crafted printed items, bindings and book matter. With a foundation in fine art and a careful attention to craftsmanship and detail the end result is more than a vehicle for information.
Our books are printed via letterpress on fine papers and illustrated with quality artwork from original wood engravings, lino cuts and intaglio prints. These sheets are then bound by hand in traditional and contemporary book structures to please the eye as well as the mind - which we endeavor to impress as carefully as our papers. - De Walden Press
- British Columbia, Canada - DE WALDEN PRESS publishes Jan Kellett's Limited Edition miniature books. For detailed information and pictures of the books, click on All Books above.

- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - The things that we communicate to others in writing- on paper- taken out of an envelope- coming into our homes from far away places is a part of us as people. Good design, beautiful materials, being made with the human hand and keeping trades alive in this time is an interest I share with many people throughout the world. I am happy that this is what I do.
- Frog Hollow Press
- Victoria, British Columbia - Letterpress and bindery publishing works by Canadian poets and artists.
- Kat Ran Press
- Florence, Massachusetts - Kat Ran Press was founded in 1994 with the aim of combining contemporary art with classical typography via traditional bookmaking techniques. We've been very fortunate to do this for such a long period of time, but as we pondered issues of design, function, and use, we've decided to not limit ourselves to letterpress printing and handmade paper, and to incorporate modern methods of book production. Our materials and methods are still top of the line, and we still work with the best printers and binders. We just get things done faster.
- Lone Oak Press
- Petersham, Massachusetts - The Lone Oak Press, a private press, was established in 1989 in Petersham, Massachusetts, to publish letterpress-printed fine press books, broadsides and ephemera with wood engravings and etchings by Abigail Rorer. The mission of The Lone Oak Press is to choose text that is engrossing and visually inspiring and to strive to publish it in a visually beautiful manner. The press was named in honor of a huge 200+ year old oak tree which stood majestically alone in the middle of the field behind the artist's home and because the press was going to be a solo venture. The tree has since fallen but the press carries on- a tribute to the oak tree, its many fruitful years, and its progeny.
The engravings and the letterpress type are printed on a Vandercook #4 proof press. The etchings are printed on a small modified M. M. Kelton & Son iron press.
All the editions of the prints and the type for the broadsides and ephemera are printed by Abigail Rorer at the Press while for the books she collaborates with other printers and binders. - Lunalux

- Peter Koch Printers

His clients and collectors range from major international research libraries to bibliophilic organizations and private collectors and publishers. Between commissions, he designs, prints and publishes limited editions of ancient Greek philosophers, the musings of maverick poets, and the images of world-renowned wood engravers and photographers. Editions Koch specializes in publishing limited edition livres d'artiste, broadsides, portfolios, and text transmission objects.

Our books on cats, gardens, waters, poetry and the like are illustrated by leading wood engravers. We also publish reference books on bookplates, books about books, biographies of engravers and other artists, reference works, instruction on engraving and biographical dictionaries.
- Richard Seibert Letterpress
- Berkely, California - A letterpress shop today is a curious mix of past and present: 19th century machinery sits comfortably next to the 21st century's keyboards and monitors.
Cases of metal type inhabit dusty cabinets, while Bezier curves define those same letterforms in the abstract virtual world. The smell of ink and solvents mingle in the hum of scanners and laser printers.
There is an inevitable collection of ephemera. Old thoughts, which someone wanted to remember, were carefully printed, and are now carefully archived.
Every printer working today learned from someone, who learned from someone, ... who learned from Johannes Gutenberg. - Shanty Bay Press
- Shanty Bay, Ontario - Shanty Bay Press was established in Shanty Bay, Ontario, in 1996 as a private press devoted to publishing livres d'artistes in which the texts and the illustrations accompanying them would have equal weight in the design of the books. The press is a partnership: the type-setting, presswork and binding are the work of Janis Butler, the illustrations are by Walter Bachinski, and the editorial, design and publishing decisions are shared. The press's equipment includes a Vandercook SP20, Vandercook Universal 1, double crown Washington hand press (1836), an etching press, and a growing collection of type.
- Star Shaped Press
- Chicago, Illinois - Here at Starshaped, nostalgia is the order of the day, meaning that all of the projects are printed using antique metal and wood type. Most of the types in my studio are at least 50 years old, some are 100 years old, and there is no digital equivalent to them! Because of their age and purpose, these types cannot be used to punch a deep impression into paper, which is very popular with new-fangled letterpress. I design all of the projects here in the studio, exclusively using my type collection, along with illustrations that I either appropriate from other sources or draw myself. I work by first collecting all of the info for your project and then mocking up a number of layouts for you to choose from. These are done digitally in an effort to approximate what the types will look like. When a final design is chosen, I then set the type and proof it for you to approve (and spell check! Such a thing doesn't exist when setting type by hand!). After that it goes on the press. All of the tasks are performed in my studio, and if you're curious, you're welcome to come and check out the process.
- Wild Carrot Letterpress
- Hadley, Massachusetts - In letterpress, working directly from type cast in metal or from relief plates, the impression you are holding in your hand is actually in the paper, not on it; the type is pressed directly into the paper. This creates an image retaining all the finer details of the type design. The process also makes for the best possible contrast between paper and type, an image that is more stimulating to the subliminal thinking process associated with visual perception.
Online Printmaking
- Alter Printmaking
- Alter printmaking - where printmaking is de-constructed and re-proposed as a conceptual process. It's not just about mark-making, but making your mark, process and dispersion and heralding changes in print technology from cut and paste publishing to a printer in every home, printed images the size of buildings, variable print, delivering tailored information, the PDF, the virtual print that only exists on a hard drive and unfolds like a performance. Lastly, print passes the baton to the www.
- I Love Typography
- All about typography and fonts. iLT is designed to inspire its readers, to make people more aware of the typography that is around them. - Printeresting
- Printeresting is an online resource for "interesting printmaking miscellany."
The site presents a range of content relevant to the contemporary print artist, including artwork, news, resources, and critical discourse. We favor forward-looking print work that addresses current art concerns, but the site is also a place to keep abreast of developments in the field, and to take note of those rare occasions when printmaking intrudes into the popular culture.
We hope PRINTERESTING will become a useful community resource for artists, teachers, curators and the generally curious. As such, we welcome your comments and suggestions.
Let us know what you think, and please spread the word! - The Print Perspective

- Tradigital Printmaking
- An original fine art print may combine different techniques such as silkscreen, wood cut, lino cut, intaglio, lithography, etching, collagraph and so on. However it is the use of inkjet (digital) print in combination with any of the traditional techniques that are the focus here. As I could not find a website that offered this research, I thought I would share my own, in this respect. Contributions are welcome.
Ex Libris (Bookplates)
- Bookplate Society
- Bookplates, also known as ex-libris, have since the 15th century been placed in books to declare ownership. Many artists, some famous such as William Hogarth, Aubrey Beardsley and John Piper, have designed bookplates, and many significant people
(e.g. Samuel Pepys and Rudyard Kipling) have used them, but a personal bookplate has been available to anyone owning a library and wishing to place in the books a printed design as a mark of possession.
Founded in 1972, The Bookplate Society is the direct descendant of the world's first such organisation, the Ex Libris Society, 1891-1908, and its creation and successor, the Bookplate Exchange Club. Our purpose is to encourage the production, use, collecting, and study of bookplates. We achieve this through our publications, lectures, visits to collections, members' auctions, social meetings, and exhibitions.

- Print Workshop Central is a new World Printmakers initiative designed to offer a series of services and resources to fine-art printmaking workshops around the world.
After consulting print workshop professionals on four continents we have concluded that they have essentially everything in common, and there are valuable online services which World Printmakers can provide for all of them, as well as for their community as a whole. These include, of course, a source of shared technical information and a central register of opportunities for print workshop people, such as grants, sponsors, potential clients, residencies, etc. But they go well beyond those essential features.
These are Print Workshop Central's principal objectives:
* To provide a high-visibility universal showcase for professional fine-art printmaking workshops, their artists and their work
* To provide these workshops with an open forum for the interchange of ideas, suggestions, best practices, and points of view
* To make creative use of the World Wide Web and the Web 2.0 to increase awareness and impact of authentic fine-art prints and their authors among art lovers everywhere.
* To provide information regarding issues of authenticity and authors' rights
* To be an advocacy and organization center for the defense of authentic fine-art prints
* To maintain a central register of opportunities for print workshops and artists
* To provide print workshop people with a forum for exchanging current technical information on the ever-evolving states of the various print media
* And to offer them a comfortable and familiar context in which to relate to, learn from and share with one another
