The image surrounding being a private investigator has changed so much in the last few years, that the concept of the white rain coated, trilby-hatted cynical chain smoking ex-cop has become almost unrecognizable to what we know of today.

The changing PI role

The truth is that private investigation has graduated into a coveted profession for young and talented people who are drawn to it not just for the high salaries that can be earned but also for the pleasant working conditions and intellectual challenges that the profession offers.

Those days, there are even certain universities and colleges that offer degrees in private investigation, that can allow direct entry into the profession, albeit at grass roots level. From this point, fledgling private investigators need to gain practical experience working on cases either behind a desk or on surveillance detail under the practiced eye and supervision of an experienced investigator.

At one time, a private investigator required no form of official education or diploma to work in the profession. The majority of them were retired police officers who had reached detective status, and retired early. Many of them brought decades of valuable hands on experience with them. However their experience was gained in some of the more fundamental aspects of police detection, such as surveillance or tracing missing people. The sad fact is that for most of these detectives, the computer age had passed them by, and whilst their experience was invaluable, they found it hard to make inroads into the benefits of a computer driven society.

Today the largest industry sectors that regularly require the services of a private detective are the large insurance companies and banks. These corporations are considered fair game for fraudsters, and if their activities were not to be kept in check, then the financial damage that they could cause would be very serious indeed. That is why insurance companies are prepared to invest in the services of a professional private investigator to keep tracks of claimants who they feel are trying to defraud them by making false insurance claims, either for personal injury or property damage. A good private investigator will be intrepid in their inquiries and will continue their surveillance until making a report sating either that the claim is legitimate or there is reasonable suspicion of fraud.

In short the profession of private investigator offer something for everybody from the hard working traditional detective who is out and about, carrying out surveillance detail in a never ending battle to catch out the people they have been detailed to discover their "dirty linen" or to the desk bound attorney or computer expert patrolling the internet searching for evidence of computer fraud.
