Love Me, Love My Music

If I hadn't ever picked a guitar up, I may have gone mad. I was 12, and extremely angry. My world had just been ripped out from under me like a rug. I couldn't turn to family, they were the problem. I'm self-taught, and I can sing, too. It's my release, and my passion. What a gift! When I play and sing, people know it's from my soul. Putting my hands around a guitar kept me from wanting to put them around the necks of my family members!

Problem Children

Be part of the problem, not the solution.

My husband, Gus, and I perform under the name "Problem Children". We are an acoustic/electric duo, and we're too loud for the coffee shops. Our song list is diverse. Mostly rock, and singer/songwriter tunes from the 60's to the present. We've been performing together for 10 years, but have played together since we met in 1976. I started playing guitar 4 years before that, but had played other instruments since 1969. In 1972, when I was 12, my parents moved us from the Bay Area to a tiny farming town further north. We lived 5mi. out of a town which had very little to offer. My brother had an old guitar that Mom had bought with trading stamps. He also had a song book titled "101 Far-out, Groovy Guitar Solos". I started teaching myself to play. After 2 weeks of blistered, bleeding fingers, and a lot of perseverance, I could play one song pretty well. I had visions of being able to play like Jerry Garcia, or Stephen Stills, but vocals are my forte, so I keep the rythm and Gus plays the pretty stuff. The rest is history.

Who IS Jerry Garcia, You Say?

The Wikipedia Wizard Will Tell You!

Sometimes I forget there's people that don't know!

Jerome John "Jerry" Garcia (August 1, 1942 - August 9, 1995) was an American musician best known for his work with the band the Grateful Dead. Though he vehemently disavowed the role, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader or "spokesman" of the group.

One of its original founders, Garcia performed with The Grateful Dead for their entire three-decade career (1965-1995). Garcia also founded and participated in a variety of side projects, including the Saunders-Garcia Band with longtime friend Merl Saunders, Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, the Garcia/Grisman acoustic duo, and Legion of Mary. Garcia co-founded the New Riders of the Purple Sage with John Dawson and David Nelson. He also released several solo albums, and contributed to a number of albums by other artists over the years as a session musician. He was well known by many for his distinctive guitar playing and was ranked 13th in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" cover story.

Later in life, Garcia was sometimes ill because of his unstable weight, and in 1986 went into a diabetic coma that nearly cost him his life. Although his overall health improved somewhat after that, he also struggled with heroin addiction, and was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he died of a heart attack in August 1995.

the "Ripple" effect

"Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near, as if it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken.
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care.
Let there be songs
to fill the air." - Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead)

Children: A Work of Love

The Apple Doesn't Fall Far.........

My son Corey's band "Armed For Apocalypse" has been signed, with a reputable label, for 4yrs and 2 albums. Their first CD is in the stores, and available online! They have a studio in England setting up a UK/Eur tour to promote the CD. Yahoo!!!!

Corey has been working for this since he was 12, he just turned 21. Am I proud? Hell yes! I gave him all the support, and encouragement, I could and he ran with it.

If you're a metal fan, keep your eyes on "Armed For Apocalypse". And watch that bass player, Corey Vaspra.

Extreme Headbangin'

Ever Bang You Head So Hard That It Snaps Right Off Your Neck?

(No harm was done to any musicians in the making of this module!)

I thought this photo of my son performing, during a live metal show, was a great example of the motion generated during headbanging. Being a metalhead since I got my first Black Sabbath album in 1974, I know how sick it is to be at a live metal show. The band explodes into one of those heavy, dark riffs that make your insides start pulsing in and out with the blasts of air the sound waves rythmically shove from the huge speakers stacked all around you. It's as if the audience, and band, has choreographed a cue for everyone to start headbanging at once, in a huge simultaneous seizure. The night was great, until you wake up the next day, hurting like you've been breaking rock in Sing-Sing the last 10 yrs.

Please read the article on headbanging below this module. It's important that we share this information on the injuries being caused by the practice of headbanging. It could ruin your life. What a drag!

Headbanging Is Causing Serious Injuries

Share This With All Metal Fans

Although we all probably saw this coming, we need to make metal fans, and musicians that are not aware of these medical findings read this article! The rhythmic movements of heads in time with the powerful tempo of ALL types of metal music is causing strokes, brain injuries, and more.

Being a metalhead myself, having a 21 yr old son in a metal band, and an 18 year old daughter who is a fan, I've been to my share of metal shows. I did a little headbanging myself, but quit. It's absurdly obvious how hard this is on your body, and being 50 soon (and subject to occasional dumb moves!), it quickly occurred to me that it was like self inflicted shaken-baby syndrome. I regularly hear young, fit metal fans complaining of headaches, and strained necks, after attending a live show!

Please read this, and share it with anyone you know that enjoys metal music. And make them take it seriously. An injury of this severity could effect the rest of their lives.
Article On Injuries Caused By Headbanging Fans
Doctors publish findings on the effects of headbanging fans, and musicians, at live metal shows. Anyone who has witnessed, or participated in the practice of headbanging can see that this is large scale shaken-baby syndrome. At times this head thrashing movement becomes very fast, as the fans keep up with the powerful riffs, and gut vibrating tempo of their favorite metal bands.

It's Only My Opinion, But............

Speak your mind, and be convincing!

I'm 48, and I love new music! I was raised listening to classical (Dad), and Rock n' Roll (Mom). I keep an open mind about music. I love the new metal band, Down. Slayer, and Pantera are staples! I remember when I discovered Black Sabbath, I've been a fan of metal since. My son plays in a metal band that kicks ****! I've become a fan of ICP, Method Man, Tech-9, and a number of rap groups. I've just recently started getting into dubstep. The artists are hugely talented, politically aware, and dedicated to their sounds. Here's props to all young musicians!

It's nothing but noise, I can't stand it.

carolkelly says:

If you think it's too loud, maybe you are too old!

It speaks to me. Old people just don't get it.

The_Health_Lady says:

I like both the new music and older music from the 60's on. If you get caught up in one style you lose out. I'll listen to all music except: country, classical & opera.

BTW - I am old & I do get it.

BethMcElliott says:

Music is a blessing. Some of the newer stuff might not be my cup of tea, but I respect the ingenuity that is required to create it, and the courage shown by breaking new ground. I give it props.

carolkelly says:

It totally speaks to me! I don't mind getting older, but I refuse to get old. People my age seem to forget about fun. If I can't have fun anymore, I guess I'm done.

What The Audience Doesn't Know.......

"One of my 1st gigs was a kegger party. I was so nervous, but trying not to show it. My set was only 5 songs long, and it went great, until the last song. I was playing "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The crowd was into it. And then I dropped my only pick right in the sound hole! I kept singing as I flipped the guitar upside down, over my head, and started shaking it. The crowd roared, they thought I was really into it. Then the pick fell out. Everyone cracked up, even me!"

Help Find A Cure

We all know someone with this disease.

I can't believe how many people I know that have been diagnosed with diabetes in the last 10 years. My Mom, Dad, and brother. My father-in-law, two of my oldest friends, and another 3 waiting for test results. What is happening? Help this organization try to find out before we all are touched by it!

JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.
