Proboscis Monkey

Have you ever seen or heard about monkey with a long nose? Sound awkward isn't it. Interestingly, these animal or "Proboscis Monkey" can only be found in one place and that place is in "Borneo". I must say, they are very strange animal yet really wonderful to learn about them since their cannot be found in any other places or country except in "Borneo" only.

And of course they are endangered species because their very few of them.

Did you see that 'Nose'

They are pretty Strange animal

DID YOU SEE THAT 'NOSE'

Found exclusively on the Island of Borneo, the proboscis monkey is member of one of the so called old world primate groups called 'Colobines' (other Colobines are, for example, the Dusky Leaf and Spectacled Leaf Monkeys.

Colobines are quite easily distinguished, for one, by the size of their stomachs. The proboscis monkey's diet is vegetarian and it will eat fruit where is available. Leaves are not easy to digest,or are they very rich in energy content. So the proboscis monkey has to eat a lot leaves and spend most of its time feeding. In order to obtain enough energy, it has a complicated stomach divided into several parts,or divided into compartments and filled with cellulose digesting bacteria. The bacteria help digest the leaves and neutralize toxins in the certain leaves, quite similar to that of ruminants.

What makes them so obvious, proboscis monkeys are noticeable because of they large pot bellies.Their stomach contents make up one quarter of the their body weight and make them look permanently pregnant.

Habitat

HABITAT

'resting'

Proboscis Monkey live almost exclusively mangrove forests near fresh water and in lowland rainforests. They can be found near rivers edges, resting and sleeping. Area around human settlements are completely avoided. They are mostly arboreal (tree living) but have been known to leave the trees in order to cross open ground, or pass through nipah palms

'female proboscis monkey'

Features

FEATURES

They have reddish-brown fur on their back and shoulders, which ends at midsection. Their chests are creamy, with a creamy collar running around their neck and around their waist to their buttocks and tails. Their arms and legs have long, gray gloves and stockings. Orange fur cover their shoulders and a cap of darker red fur covers their head. They faces are flesh colored with small, intelligent brown eyes. They ears are small and lie flat against their heads.

'Bachelor Group'

The male and female are distinguished by the sized of the body and the nose. The male is bigger than female and its nose is more pointed. Females do not have this characteristic. The nose of male can be 4 inches long, hangs down like a small trunk to the end of the monkey's mouth. In the female and young, the nose is shorter and turned up at the end. Male weighing in at an average of about 20 kgs while the female, weighing in at about 10kgs.

The males' big nose is a secondary sex characteristic: the bigger the nose is, the sexier the monkey is. It has also been suggested that the nose aids in radiating excess body heat.

These monkeys are also proficient swimmers and expert at leaping from tree to tree or from a riverside tree into the middle of a river. They often cross rivers and narrow points in big groups because they run a risk of being preyed upon by crocodiles, while in the water.

Group Structures

Troops of proboscis monkey average in size from 12 to 27 individuals but can be as big as 60 to 80 males and females. They groups don't appear to have a lot of structure. Both males and females will move out of their natal group. Their social system has two (2) levels. One is all-male groups. These are made up of juveniles, adolescents and adult males. Juveniles males will leave the group they were born to at about 18 months and join an all-male group. There is very little aggression between the males when they join together to form troops.

The second level is made up of several groups which are lead by separate males. Each male will have his own harem and several of these harems will come together to form a troop. Females may transfer from one harem to another when young but the harems are mostly stable. Proboscis monkeys are not territorial species and a group's range will overlap that of many other groups.

Adult females tend to coordinate troop movement and lead groups when feeding. One of the dominant males will keep a look out in a tall tree while the group feeds.

Interesting facts

Class: Mamalia

Order: Primates

Suborder: Anthropoidea

Family: Cercopithectdae which includes 18 genera and 81 species.

Subfamily: Colobinae

Genus: Nasali

Species: Larvatus (Proboscis Monkey)

  • In Malay, the proboscis monkey is known as 'Monyet Belanda', meaning 'Dutchman Monkey'. The proboscis monkey got its Malay name during the colonial period. Could it have received that name due to certain characteristics the locals felt the monkey and the European traders and colonialists share?

  • In elderly animals, the pendulous nose can measure 17.5 cm, a quarter of its body length (which can be 70 cm).

  • The young are born with vivid blue faces.

  • They are good swimmers and their fingers and toes are partially webbed. No other primates likes to swim.

  • It is listed as endangered by the USDI and Appendix 1 of the CITES.

Vocal Communication

They have a way to communicate to each other.

There is four (4) different type of communication.

@Photo by Tim Laman

  1. Growls: these calls are made by adult males and this functions to calm another member of group down.

  2. honk: these calls are made by adult males of the group. This function as an aggressive call which threats members of the group and is also made in the presence of predators.

  3. shriek: these calls are given by juvenile of both sexes and adult females. This is emitted when the individual is agitated or excited.

  4. scream: this vocalization is heard during agonistic interaction. This call is heard during feeding bouts and at night during sleep.

Regular Activities

The whole forest is a giant jungle gym for young proboscis monkeys, who seem to have plenty of time to play. While females are resting or foraging, energetic youngsters play games in the canopy: swinging from vines and branches or even from the foot of a dangling playmate.

Up a tree and out of gas, a proboscis monkey takes a snooze. It's time well spent. These monkeys have large, chambered stomachs containing various symbiotic bacteria that help digest the leaves, seeds, and green fruits that form the bulk of their diet. The monkeys need to take frequent rests to let the mixture brew.

The dainty appendage on this young male proboscis monkey's face will grow as he does-and eventually curl down over his mouth. Perched on a bough in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Borneo, this youth lives in a group of bachelor

On the hunt for fresh foraging sites, a male, at left, and his harem group amble over a stretch of coastal mudflats in Sarawak, where low tide has exposed mangrove roots. Travel on the ground is rare for proboscis monkeys, who live almost entirely in the treetops of Borneo's riverine and mangrove forests and swamps. Though they travel a fair distance in search of food, they never stray far from water.

'Ready For Love'

Displaying the muscled limbs of a constant climber, a male proboscis monkey scales a tree, preparing to leap across a river in Sabah. Bachelor groups, such as the one he lives in, usually number 10 to 15 monkeys. But as one of the oldest and biggest males in the group, he's about ready to go solo and establish a harem of his own.

Proboscis Monkey (Nasali Larvatus)

The Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus), also known as the Monyet Belanda (in Malay), the Bangkatan (in Indonesian) or simply the Long-nosed Monkey, is a reddish-brown arboreal Old World monkey that is endemic to the south-east Asian island of Borneo. It belongs in the monotypic genus Nasalis, although the Pig-tailed Langur traditionally also has been included in this genus - a treatment still preferred by some.Bradon-Jones, D., A. A. Eudey, T.
