Have your reached the point in training your dog where you just can't handle it anymore and need some advice? Well there are a few places that you can try. Have you thought about professional training? Whether you take classes at Petsmart, Petco, or another local dog training facility. Most of the time it's enough to make a difference in your dog, and your relationship with your dog.
Petsmart
Petsmart offers a variety of courses to include Puppy Preschool, Basic Dog Training, Advanced Classes, Tricks, and Private Classes. Petsmart tends to include the CGC training in with their advanced course, but you can, also, sign up to have your dog tested without the full course.Petsmart, also, has different seminars to include housebreaking you puppy and leash walking.
The puppy classes are 6 weeks long. In this class, the puppies learn basic commands like sit, come, down, and sit/stay. The puppy parents, also, learn potty training basics, positive reinforcement techniques, the crate training method, health care, nutrition, and grooming. At the end of every class, there is a puppy play time. With every class, getting closer to the end, the puppies get fewer minutes each class to play as they are learning more commands, but this is a great socializing tool for any and all puppies.
The basic courses are 8 weeks long and end with a graduation ceremony. In the basic classes you learn commands like, sit, down, stay, come, and leave it. These commands can vary by store and trainer's preferences.
The advance course tends to be 8 weeks long. The commands tend to range from distance stays, heeling, and basic tricks. Again, the commands in this course can vary by the trainer and store's preferences.
I have gone through the Petsmart course several times with different dogs. I've gone through all the courses except the puppy class. I have had great successes with the Petsmart classes.
Petco
Petco offers fewer classes and few class options than Petsmart, but in general the classes have the same value. Petco offers puppy classes and basic obedience. Select stores offer advanced/ intermediate training. Petco, also, offers CGC testing. They will hold seminars for housebreaking and leash walking, as well. The puppy classes are 6 weeks long. In the class, basics are discussed, such as house training, positive reinforcement, grooming, nutrition, and healthcare. The puppies learn the basic commands like sit, down, stay, come, and walking on a leash. Some stores will allow the puppies to socialize at the end of class before letting loose for the day, or night.
The basic classes are 6 weeks long, as well. For the most part the same training commands and discussions happen in the basic classes as the puppy classes. The commands are refined and worked on. There tends to be more discussion about problem behaviors, such as pulling, barking, jumping, mouthiness, chewing, and digging. The classes discuss problem solving techniques, as well.
I have never been through a full Petco training course. I have been under Petco's training for dog training.

My Opinion
I've met trainers from both sides that know what they're doing. For the most part training comes with experience. Some trainers I've spoken with, have years upon years of experience, and are stuck in their ways as to their training methods. Others know an above average amount of information, and are willing to learn more. The rest, know very little, and are sponges to the training idea. All of which have their pros and cons.
I have better opinions about Petsmart's dog training versus Petco's training. But that does not mean that your Petco has fantastic trainers and classes. I would say give it a try!
I'm all for dog training, and if you are having problems training your dog. Whether you don't know any techniques or need new ones. Give it another shot. Try another way. Go to a professional/semi-professional trainer to help you. I do applaud you for trying yourself. That's the first step!
I will say that trainers on both sides go through a training course.
