Gambling for a living.

I have been a professional gambler for over 3 years now. This is my full time job, I don't have any other income to live from. This lens is here to give you a list of the pros and cons of becoming a professional gambler, it will help those of you who may be thinking of giving up your day job in the hope of profiting from gambling for a living. Please consider things wisely, this is a very big decision!

Professional Gambling - The positives.

A list of good things about being a professional gambler.

You get to be your own boss: You work when you want to work and for how long you want to work. You take holidays when you feel like it, you control your destiny much more than someone in a normal job. You get out of the 9-5 rat race.

Indulge in watching as much sport as you like - It's your job!

The potential to make a lot of money, more than you ever could in any normal job.

Professional Gambling - The negatives.

Some of the bad things about becoming a professional gambler.

You are risking large amounts of money: This is not just your own money but in some cases your family's money.

Future job prospects are affected greatly. Your CV now has listed - "professional gambler" for x years. This is not what future potential employers like to see on someone's CV.

Society will react towards you in different ways. Some will have a fascination with your occupation, others (the majority) will look down upon you in disbelief, mistrust, pity or disgust. You will not be climbing any of society's social ladders with this occupation.

You will not be adding much value to society.

Many hours will be spent alone. Most professional gamblers work from home betting via the internet, this is usually a solitary occupation. There is not a lot of interaction with the outside world and other people.

You will endure losing runs, these are emotionally draining for you and for others around you if you let it affect relationships.

There is a risk you may be addicted to gambling, this might only get worse if you are doing it all the time and can be exaggerated if you begin to lose.

Professional gamblers work very very hard to maintain their edge. There is not a lot of glamour to the profession, you will be spending hours trading or looking for suitable opportunities and statistics.

Many people who turn professional gamblers lose in the end and have to give up. This is usually because they are not ready to do it. Either their edge doesn't really exist - they have been lucky in the past, or they didn't wait long enough to build up enough financial stability before becoming a professional.

You will need a lot of money saved before you turn professional. Normally this is much more than people are willing to admit they need. Make sure you have enough for a years salary - this should be untouched by gambling. On top of this make sure you have enough for the rest of your family for a year or more. The on top of this you will need money to use for capital, only a small % of which will be risked per bet. Most pros make high 5 figure amounts or 6 figure amounts before they turned professional. This amount will ensure you steer clear of pressure to make money.

Please consider wisely your decision, there are many negatives, with not that many positives. The positives that exist are very attractive to most people, but are they really worth it..
