MySpace has gotten a bad reputation for many things, mostly due to how people use it. This is unfortunate because there are many excellent tools and hacks available that allow users to personalize their page, group, and blog and create a fun online presence. Despite some of the things that go on around MySpace, you can develop and maintain a professional image and use the community to promote yourself and your products.
The key is to control what you have control over, and not to let outside negative influences damage the work you have done. With the moderation tools that MySpace offers, this can actually be done very easily.
Your Profile Appearance
Create a professional profile by keeping it simple.
One way to get around this is to simply add a plain background you have found online and like. My personal tip, if you're not HTML savvy, is to hire a web designer to create a simple and streamlined profile page that includes a coordinating background and tables. This will give you a starting point from which you can add additional features, such as extra tables, a custom contact box, and flash tools.

- Layouts2.com
- Some very simple layouts that can easily be altered with a little CSS and HTML knowhow.
- 123mycodes.com
- Simple HTML layouts that load quickly and contain no graphics - very easy to alter colors and add more features.
- Cool MySpace Layouts
- These themes have a bit more jazz but are still simple and allow plenty of "white space."
Your Profile Details
You can decide what information you want to share.
Part of the way MySpace was designed includes the opportunity to share what some people consider very personal details, such as age, height, sexual orientation, and family status. If you believe that posting information may hurt you professionally, you can choose to leave it off.MySpace also allows you to list hobbies and interests, such as your favorite music, books, TV shows, and entertainment. If you don't think that posting anything here will help your image, you can choose to leave it blank. Another option is to use this to further promote yourself. If you are an author, post images with links to your favorite books or books you have published. If you are an artist, post pictures and links of your work.
For code that will allow you to hide this information, visit MySpace Made Easy.
Pics, Video, and Media
Use the interactivity to your advantage.
MySpace provides the average person a great way to share photos, video clips, and media sources with their integrated media tools. As a business owner or independent contractor, you can use these to your advantage! Create mini-commercials for your product, before-and-after galleries for your contracting projects, or post comics about your industry. Don't let how teens often use these tools deter you from making them work for you.Aren't sure about this? Take some ideas from Russ Feingold, Democratic Senator from WI, who has used his MySpace page to share video clips, political comics, and other media resources.
Keeping your Comments in Line
To censor or not to censor - what other people write.
If you've ever visited the MySpace page of someone famous - Kenny Chesney for example - you may notice that their comments are packed full of huge, glittery images and messages that flow in at 100 comments per hour. For people like this who have fan clubs, allowing those images and messages to rush in isn't necessarily a bad thing. It allows people to express their appreciation and connect with the artist. On your MySpace page it may be a different story. Such comments and off-color images might not be as welcome. If you have a lot of personal friends on your page as well as professional contacts, this can get even trickier. After all, it's fun to tease your friends with such comments!
One simple way to keep your comments clean is to simply delete any that are inappropriate. You can do this by logging in to your account, viewing your comments, and editing them to delete the ones you wish. A note to the sender with a gentle message about the content can help deter future issues.
If HUGE comment images is your problem, visit MySpace Made Easy for a few lines of code that will keep them from stretching out your profile dimensions.
Don't get TOO Strict
After all, you are only human
How can you lighten up a bit without getting out of line?
- Participate in surveys. Go ahead, you know you want to! They're fun, a little addicting, and can give you a great opportunity to share information with others that you might not otherwise have a reason to talk about. Don't hesitate to be a little picky, too - you don't have to fill them all out or answer invasive questions.
- Blog about your daily grind. For you, your work day is standard and blah. For others, it could be very interesting to know what it's really like to wind up with 4000 dead roses or take orders from hyper booster club parents for personalized football jerseys.
- Post fun photos. This weekend grab a friend or coworker and go nuts with the digital camera. Get a shot of you working on your laptop in your fuzzy slippers (a feet only shot would be ok), changing the oil on a hot car, or taking your own blood pressure. Post them in your pics and rotate your default image occasionally.
