Outsourcing Can Help You Increase Your Businesses Profits
This is a lens about how I've used outsourcing to boost my business thus increasing business profits. In the past year, I don't think I could have kept my head above water without my team of workers.
Outsourcing comes in many shapes in sizes. Some business owners I know, outsource by the project. I have workers that dedicate 40 hours a week to the promotion and expansion of my businesses.
Things You Should Think About Before Hiring An Outsourced Worker
- What is your budget?
- How long do you anticipate this project will run?
- Is this a specialized task? Does your worker need to have special knowledge in order to complete this task?
- If they don't have that knowledge are you willing to train them?
- Have you planned out how this task is to be executed?
- Do you truly know how many workers you need to accomplish this task?
- Do you have a measurable way to gauge if your project is on time and within your budget
- Do you have a project management system in place?
Managing Your Workers
speaking from experience
I've been working with outsources for the past 8 months and its been great. In the beginning it was a little difficult managing so many workers.
We run about 18 sites that all have good search engine ranking. In the past year I've seen sites start to suffer because we didn't have the time or resources to update them and do the maintenance on them.
It was decided that we needed to hire more staff, but hiring local talent proved to be too expensive. So we turned to outsourcing.
Outsourcing to the Philippines allows us to stay well within our budget.
A few people asked me why I choose the Philippines, simply put I found that the workers understood English better. I tried India but the blogs were a complete disaster. I think they were using one of those really bad translators. I spent more time fixing the post then I would if I had simply wrote it myself.
While the English isn't perfect for 2 of my workers, 2 of the others write beautifully. Early in the year we joined with an agency so that all of our workers would have a spot to work and work together as a team.
Why I choose an agency?
I tried several of the elance.com & guru.com sites, but I had trouble getting them to work within my schedule. I had a sneaking suspicion that even though I was paying for a 40 hour week, I was getting way less. The last worker I hired from one of those sites, I caught soliciting more work.
How did I catch him? I created another profile and asked him if he was interested in a position that would be 40 hours a week. He accepted my second job posting so he would effectively be working for me 80 hours a week. It made me wonder how many other jobs he was working on. It really made me mad because he was already behind in our project. When we had started this project I had given him a months trial but I ended up letting him go 2 weeks in. When I confronted him about taking the 2nd posting he told me he just needed money and didn't have a life anymore, just worked. I didn't believe him.
What you should OUTSOURCE and what you should not?
Recently I attended a seminar and there was a lot of interest in using my outsourcing services. One thing I noticed was that some people had the wrong idea of what task should be outsourced and which ones need to be kept in house.
IMHO only task that MUST BE DONE, but do not require that you do them yourself should be outsourced. For example link building. You must constantly seek out
quality link partners, but as a business owner, is that best use of your time?
Your time would be better used creating new products for your business, seeking out JV partners to sell your product, or working on your marketing plan.
Creating a marketing plan is another good example. Creating the actual marketing plan must be done by you, the business owner. Once its created there will be parts of the plan that can be handed over to an outsourcing company. Such as link building, SEO, website design. Things that need to be done, but can be by someone else, leaving you to continue to build and expand your business.
How are you using outsourcing in your business?
Outsourcing By The Hour?
Currently we rent our employees on a monthly basis.. Recently I've been asked several times if I could provide an outsourced worker on an hourly or daily basis.

The Philippines is ranked #1 in the availability of knowledge-based jobs and workers worldwide, and ranked 4th among Asian nations in terms of labor quality, according to a survey conducted by the U.S. based Meta Group. Aside from the huge pool of productive, trainable and multi-skilled labor force, the country competes in the quality of its managers and information technology (IT) staff and engineers. The unique edge comes from a high level of proficiency in English (the Philippines is the 3rd largest English-speaking country in the world).
Fueling the recent growth spurt in the outsourcing industry in the Philippines are more higher-end outsourcing services such as Web design, software development, and animation (Shameen 2006).
