Singing Bowls Send A Voice...
"Go Now, or they will be gone...."
This is the story of Ryan and the High Himalayan 'Tibetan' Singing Bowls. Ringing the few singing bowls he had for nigh on 30 years, Ryan finally 'heard' the inner footsteps of these awesome bowls disappearing amidst the cultural upheaval of Nepal. By a series of serendipitous encounters, Ryan found himself sitting in a Nepalese Ali Baba's cave of 1000s of these ancient bowls, from which he culled just a few hundred for their phenomenal (sustained) sound properties.
Ryan is not a musician although his father was, and his father had perfect pitch. Maybe it's a genetic component that Ryan has a rare 'ear' for these singing bowls. Compelling to Ryan is the SOUND; profound sound, of these one-of-a-kind metallurgy (masterpiece or happy accident... that's part of the 'story'!), from a region of the world that yields metals unbeknown to any other place.
PS the framed picture here is one of those cosmic joys whereby Ryan's daughter Sierra painted for her dad a birthday card when she was living in Canada, and mailed it, having no idea that when it arrived at our house, it perfectly depicted the scene in our cottage window; even down to the colors of the prayer flags (in the correct order!)

Ring the bowls.....
The Magic of the Singing Bowls
with special thanks to Denise Gallant for capturing the essence
After this particular session, he asked, cocking his head with his twinkly smile;
"Any questions?"
To which someone in the audience said; "Can we take you home?!"
And he said, well, my lovely wife gets to take me home :) but you're welcome to come up and play with the bowls..
So, I'm the lucky (lovely!) wife... and we both are LOVING how beautifully Denise Gallant captured the essence of Ryan's other Love.

This take you to the video embedded in Ryan's Profound HImalayan Sounds website (a treat : )
- Profound Himalayan Sounds
- "This Video is a distillation of a Singing Bowl Experience event at the Pacific Cultural Center in Santa Cruz in May of 2009. The event, as usual, was unscripted in front of a group of interested individuals. Much of what I said was in response to queries from the audience though the questioners were edited out for brevity. After the event the audience came up and played the singing bowls themselves which would make a nice video on it's own. The singing bowls you see were all for sale as opposed to being some special performance set. The singing bowls in the video are a range of different qualities as are the ones listed on this website."
Surround Sound
Treasures come home
Made from a flat piece of metal and pounded blow-by-blow into a bowl
An astonishing 'Jambati' (group) bowl; one person alone could not make it
Reverberating through cyberpsace realms!

The Circle of Awareness
"Himalayan singing bowls are infused with magic and mystery. The magic is in the incredible sounds, the mystery is why do they exist at all. Today the average Nepali villager is as likely to ring his bowls as you are likely to ring a three quart stainless steel saucepan. In the past I do not think this was the case. There has to be a reason these bowls contain the traces of gold, silver and other metals that impart the superior sound quality. There has to be a reason some bowls appear tuned and ring with such intense purity. I think there was a time in the past when these bowls were valued for their sound and used for spiritual practices, ceremonies and awareness enhancing entertainment but these uses are lost today.
The circle of awareness is closed when these bowls move from their present forgotten state in the wild countryside of the Himalayas to being once again valued and used in a new home. There is an awareness, a presence in these amazing instruments that comes alive with use and appreciation. Facilitating this transfer, putting these rare objects into the hands of appreciative new owners is one of the great pleasures I derive from running Profound Himalayan Sounds. Think of the antique singing bowl in your possession as a rescued object and take your stewardship seriously."

I recently returned from a trip to the Himalayas with a spectacular collection of ancient Tibetan style singing bowls. These special objects, which range in size from delicate teacups to powerful five pounders, make incredibly sweet and complex sounds when played with special ringing implements. In this unamplified concert you will hear a world class collection played in a manner that will touch you deeply.
Learn About Himalayan Singing Bowls
Deep in the Himalayas in the ancient past the singing bowl makers practiced their now lost craft. For hundreds, even thousands of years singing bowls were in use in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and Northern India. For the past few decades these bowls have been making their way to the West but now the supply is starting to dwindle. The talk will cover such topics as the bowls use in healing, spiritual practice and daily life. You'll get a flavor of their history, styles and how they were crafted. It will also go into the surprising forces that are making them available now and what might happen in the future.- Why we post Singing Bowl Event on '4Grabs.org'
- 4Grabs is a great (free) place to post. It works with GPS (global postioning) so that you can see easily what cool stuff is happening in your neighborhood. Conceived by an intrepid sailor who sailed 100,000 miles around this blue planet and then thought, Wow, what If WE (the people) could map the world, sharing every good thing we stumble upon in this way....
