Support = Success!

PMBOK ( or Project management body of knowledge) is a project management guide similar to Program Management Support which is an organized effort to accomplish a specific (and usually) one-time objective, for example, construct a building or implement a major new computer system. Program management includes developing a project plan, which includes defining and confirming the project goals and objectives, identifying tasks and how goals will be achieved, quantifying the resources needed, and determining budgets and timelines for completion. It also includes managing the implementation of the project plan, along with operating regular 'controls' to ensure that there is accurate and objective information on 'performance' relative to the plan, and the mechanisms to implement recovery actions where necessary. Implementing the program will help run the company smoother and have more time for outside activities for the office such as helicopter skiing. Projects usually follow major phases or stages (with various titles for these), including feasibility, definition, project planning, implementation, evaluation and support/maintenance.

PMO Support provides assistance with the management of a project. The key differentiator between support and project management is that support is not a managerial role. A supporting team member will often update the schedule, run meetings, follow up on open issues and other similar tasks, but they will not have the responsibility or authority to make project level decisions. Supporting on a project is often a good role for junior PMs, showing them the processes and placing them with a more seasoned PM for mentoring.

Support is the hard part of project management and it is what often meets the most resistance. Team members do not want to take minutes, track issues and action items, produce reports and so on. As with all clouds, this one has a sliver lining and becomes one of the keys gaining project management acceptance.

If you - the PMO - perform the support function, your stakeholders can realize the value of project management without incurring the cost. This will open a lot of doors and minds. Providing exceptional project support then is one of the first steps in building a great PMO.

PMBOK
PMO support increases the probability of project success. Many Program Managers are overburdened and unable to concentrate on important activities, such as managing scope and fostering communications.
All About PMO
The Project Management Office (PMO) in a business or professional enterprise is the department or group that defines and maintains the standards of process, generally related to project management, within the organization.
What To Look For In Program Management Support
Statistics show that over 90% of all planned business projects never meet time, cost, or quality targets, mostly due to a lack of program management support. It's not necessarily the fault of your team. Your own people have enough on their plate meeting their own scope of the project without worrying about organizing and meeting funding goals and deadlines as they meet the bigger project.
