Classic Progressive House
Progressive house is a style of music that began to develop in the early 1990's in the UK.
Unlike other genres of dance music that rely heavily on big dramatic buildups and breakdowns, progressive house is noted for its long, slow buildups and complex layering of sounds and melodies that slowly progress throughout the tracks, which are sometimes over 10 minutes each in length.
Not always strictly progressive house, DJ's will mix elements of progressive trance, breaks and other genres into their sets and their recordings.
This genre really began to take off around 1992 when two pioneers of the sound met whilst DJing at the famous Renaissance club in Mansfield, England. Sasha and John Digweed (above) soon started to perform at the club together, and in 1993 the duo released their first mix album, titled Renaissance - The Mix Collection.

Pioneers of progressive house
But one label in particular, Global Underground , have been at the forefront of progressive house since their first release in 1996.
GU001 Tony De Vit, Live in Tel Aviv was the labels first release in and since then there have been 35 other mix CDs from the worlds finest DJs with GU036 Darren Emerson, Bogota released in January 2009.
The Global Underground name has enjoyed massive success and popularity amongst millions of dance music fans the world over, and with several spinoffs from the label including the Sampler Series, Prototype and Nubreed Series, they continue to release quality compilations. No progressive music fan would be without at least a few albums with the name Global Underground on it.

Hooj Choons
During their time, Hooj Choons were consistantly releasing quality tracks and albums and by the the time of their demise in 2003, they had released nearly 150 singles, over 20 albums, had 4 sub-labels and a club night.

Hooj released such enduring singles as "Greece 2000" from Three Drives, "Invisible" by Tilt, and the progressive hit "Stage One" by Space Manoeuvres, which is still being re-released with new mixes after 5 years.
The seminal trance hit "Seven Cities" by Solar Stone was released in September of 1999. Around their 90th release, Hooj's sound began to change again - this time to a housier, more minimal vibe marked by releases such Killahurtz's "West on 27th" and Pete Lazonby's "Sacred Cycles.

Progressive house DJ's and Producers
Sasha
Sasha began his career playing acid house in the late 1980s and became a central figure in the development and popularisation of electronic dance music. He partnered with fellow DJ John Digweed in 1993, touring internationally and producing a series of mix albums. Through their track selection and mixing techniques, Sasha and Digweed were instrumental in the evolution of progressive trance and house music.Sasha has produced multiple UK-charting singles and has remixed tracks for artists such as Madonna and The Chemical Brothers. His remix of Felix da Housecat's "Watching Cars Go By" earned him a 2004 Grammy nomination.
After achieving success as a producer and DJ, Sasha worked with younger DJs and producers such as BT and James Zabiela, influencing their musical styles and techniques. His use of live audio engineering equipment helped popularise technological innovations among DJs who formerly relied on records and turntables.

John Digweed
John Digweed began DJing around age 13. His breakthrough came in 1993 when he got a gig at the Renaissance Club in Mansfield after fellow DJ, Sasha heard his demo.He started the record label Bedrock Records to further promote the music he was playing at the time. In addition to starting the Bedrock imprint, he and friend Nick Muir produce under the Bedrock alias. Digweed celebrated 10 years of his Bedrock club night at Matter, London on 10/10/2008 with a near on 10 hour set.
Digweed, along with Sasha, established a monthly residency at the now defunct New York club Twilo, a residency that established itself as a key location for the American electronic music scene. The residency began in 1996 with a lukewarm reception but grew into one of the most popular club nights in New York City by the end of its run in 2001. Sasha and Digweed played at Twilo on the last Friday of every month, playing sets that lasted between 8 and 12 hours.

Darren Emerson
Darren Emerson began mixing Hip-Hop records at the age of 14, and by 16 was DJing regularly at local venues. He began to explore House Music and quickly acquired a reputation as one of the top British DJs, and demand for his services saw him playing at top clubs such as The Milk Bar, Limelights, and Venus. In 1990 he was introduced to Karl Hyde who would later invite him to become the third member of the group Underworld. 1993's 'dubnobasswithmyheadman' was their commercial breakthrough onto the British electronica scene. While working on their second album, 1996's Second Toughest in the Infants, they released the single "Born Slippy .NUXX", which was an instant hit following its inclusion on the soundtrack to the movie, Trainspotting.
Darren parted ways with Underworld in 2000 and then concentrated more on his solo career as a DJ and remixer, and also a label owner. "Global Underground: Uruguay" (2000) and "Global Underground: Singapore" (2001) soon followed on the Global Underground label, with "Episode 1" on his new Underwater label following in 2002.
Over the past few years, Emerson has been busy touring the world whilst preparing for his own solo debut album and also releasing another Global Underground mix album, 036: Bogota at the start of 2009.

Nick Warren
Nick Warren began DJing in 1988, playing mainly reggae and indie music until house music became more popular in the UK. By the early 1990s, Warren had become one of the most popular DJs in Bristol, performing regularly at the superclub Vision and also DJing for Massive Attack. In the mid 1990s he began a residency at Liverpool dance club Cream and in 1997, Warren was given the opportunity to mix the second entry in the still young Global Underground series. The album, Global Underground 003: Prague, is a live set of Warren's from Prague. Although labelled as 003, this was actually only the second release on the Global Underground label.
After the success of this album and the relationship he had built with the label, he has gone on to release seven other mix albums for the series, with 035: Lima being the latest, released in 2008.
Nick Warren also had some commercial success being one half of the group Way Out West and is continuing to record under that name.

Dave Seaman
Dave Seaman was formerly a member of the DMC Publishing, and editor of music magazine Mixmag. He formed one half of Brothers In Rhythm with Steve Anderson, doing production work for (amongst others) Pet Shop Boys and Kylie Minogue. He has since founded Audio Therapy record label and he is also well-known for his three releases in the famed Global Underground series and a number of releases for Renaissance.Dave Seaman's musical style leans more toward the progressive trance sound rather than strictly progressive house.

- Decent article, but most artists here lean towards popular melodic trance, not progressive house in its rawest form. Artist like Spooky, React 2 Rhythm, and Leftfield defined the do-it-all genre of house music. Whether it sounded like techno, breakbeat, dub, ambient, or trance, progressive maintained its housey nature.

- What a load of crap.
you shouldn't let kids writing articles for a genre they weren't around.
Proggy illiterate this article.
Supposed classics nowhere near reality (apart from leftfield),
most of them are trance. Where r the real classics?
And how about Sasha & Diggers being the pioneers. You must be taking the piss.
What about the true pioneer FABIO PARAS.
Go home, you are too young.
