Did you know that dental abscesses were common cause of death in Ancient Egypt? How about that Peritonitis is still a leading cause of adult tooth loss? Did you know that some people never have symptoms of periodontal disease until it's too late?

Raising awareness about the importance of dental health and routine dental care for everyone!

I learned my lesson the hard way! Putting off routine visits the Dentist can be both painful and expensive.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is the infection of the bone and tissue that support the teeth. The milder form is gingivitis, the more serious form is periodontitis which can lead tooth loss. When the plaque that forms naturally on teeth becomes too thick the lower layer become anaerobic and produce acids which decay teeth, inflame gums and even dissolve bone. Yes, that is correct, dissolve bone.

Why am I telling you this? Because I've recently learned a very important lesson, routine dental care is not something you should put off till later. For the past few years I've been busy working, parenting, home repairing and time slipped away from me. Late last summer my gum was inflamed and sore for a few days. Around Thanksgiving I noticed my tooth was wiggly. That didn't seem right to me. So I made that long put off trip to the dentist.

Yep, adult teeth are not supposed to wiggle. It was wiggling because the toxins produced by the bacteria were eating away my bone.

After a root canal and a scaling, where the dentist scraped out the abscess and smoothed the side of the root of my tooth and weeks and weeks of prescription mouthwash, my mouth feels much better.

Prescription mouthwash, in case you were wondering, leaves the most horrible taste in your mouth and it lingers for hours.

So that brings me to this Café Press store, to raise awareness and help pay for my outrageous and preventable dental bill. I have learned my lesson and I want to spread the word Dental Health is Important!

Slate Hidden RationsWhy poor kids can't find a dentist.
This is completely insane.

Earlier this year, Deamonte Driver, a 12-year-old boy living in Maryland, died after he got a tooth infection that led to a brain infection. Deamonte had never had routine dental care.* The problem wasn't that he was among America's 47 million uninsured. He was covered by Medicaid, the federal health-insurance program for the poor, which includes dental care for kids. But Medicaid reimbursement rates for dentists in Maryland-as in many states-are set at such low rates that few dentists accept Medicaid patients.
The Wall Street Journal Rolling Over Dental Money
A growing number of group dental plans are rewarding members who receive regular preventive care with an extra allowance they can use to help cover big expenses such as bridges or implants.

Clean Those Choppers: Periodontal Disease May Accelerate Pre-Diabetes
It's already clear that people with type 2 diabetes are more susceptible to periodontal disease than people without diabetes. Now researchers at the University of Copenhagen School of Dentistry have found that periodontal disease may contribute to pre-diabetes, at least in rats.

About Elizabeth_J_Irwin

I'm a mother,  daughter, sister, aunt and a cat slave. I have one child,  he's a darn good kid and I can be one of those babbling proud parents. I have two bothers, one sister, five nieces and no nephews.

Someday I'm hoping to get myself together and become a real writer. I publish here and there nothing big or well paid, but it is encouraging. My sole piece of published fiction is The Old Cat of Long Valley. I have two identities on Associated Content Elizabeth J. Rawson and Ella Meyers, I don't know why I did two names other than I thinking that I would use the second one for editorial pieces and I would want to forward those to a different set of buddies.

Well that's probably way more than you really wanted to know, so I'll stop there.
