A Tribute To Those Who Help The Homeless

In this lens, we will pay tribute to some remarkable people who tirelessly help the people who have no place to call home. As the french say "les sans abris".

We obviously can not mention everyone of the volunteers but we will try to profile a few in order to give you some incentive to read further on the subject.

Homelessness

A brief History Of Homelessness

Homelessness is the condition and social category of people who lack housing, because they cannot afford, or are otherwise unable to maintain, regular, safe, and adequate shelter. The term "homelessness" may also include people whose primary nighttime residence is in a homeless shelter, in an institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized, or in a public or private place not designed for use as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.Office of Applied Studies, United States Department of Health and Human Services,"Terminology"United States Code, Title 42, Chapter 119, Subchapter I, § 11302. Things We Can Do To Help

  • Here is a wonderful gesture that an individual or group can do to help the homeless. How about sending some soups to local homeless shelter in your local area?

A 136-Qts carton makes around 500 servings - that's a lot of hot meals that you'll be providing!

Once in a while, we can drop off a few non persishable grocery items to our local homeless shelter. I don't think it will hurt us too much as we have so much to eat already .

I have mixed feelings about the homeless. I have met a number of homeless people. And the real problem is not usually the lack of services or the person "falling onto hard times." Usually, the person is "stuck" in a certain "cast," just like everybody else. They just happen to be born into a lower "cast" (i.e. They are still dealing with events and beliefs based on previous experiences in their life).

Homeless people tend to be either "mentally ill" or the have "addictions" and are unable to cope with regular pressures of life.

I think the programs in place are not really benefiting the homeless for the long term. Most homeless probably need more mentoring rather than just a place to stay from a "social worker." Some systems actually prevent homeless people from making the critical choice as to whether they are going to live their life or not.

Great job on this lens. 5*. They need all the help they can get to get on their feet. I crochet hats and give them to the homeless. Please see my Hats For Homeless lens. Thanks.
