Project Safety Net -- A Helping Hand
Project Safety Net is a grass roots non-profit organization founded for two main objectives. One is to assist Americans nationwide in the event of a tragedy such as Hurricane Katrina. The second is an ongoing commitment to help those who, despite working hard, are in need of a "safety net" to avoid falling through the cracks in the system.
I am the webmaster for Project Safety Net and just want to share it from here. I also own several other websites, including this Mahjong Games site.
Project Safety Net
A helping hand--Saving the World One Family at a Time
What is Project Safety Net?
Our Beginnings and Mission
All too often there are too few resources for families who face crisis despite their hard work and good choices. This is where we intend to serve as a safety net for those who may not otherwise qualify for traditional assistance. If we work together we can help assure that no family struggles alone, and keep them from "falling through the cracks". In this Great Nation, there is no excuse for not helping those who are trying their best to help themselves. Together, lets extend a helping hand to those in need in our small corner of the world.
Our Beginnings
Following Hurricane Katrina, we formed a small group of volunteers and were referred to 3 families in crisis by a Red Cross worker at a shelter in Atlanta. We contacted each family by phone and asked what they needed, what size clothing they wore, and if they wanted help finding a host family to stay with until they could return to their homes in NOLA or find a more permanent living situations.
Through in-kind and monetary donations from a large network of people, we were able to fully clothe 41 people in less than 3 weeks, including 18 children, and provide them with gas gift cards, grocery store gift cards, and retail gift cards in the first week following Hurricane Katrina. We drove the items to Atlanta on Monday Sept 5th, and the rest were shipped to their host homes in Houston, Mississippi and Austin. We went on to help hundreds over the following 6 months, including a Katrina Kids Christmas drive.
Our Mission
With greater donations we hope to expand what we can offer the families who are struggling. Post Hurricane Katrina, we intend to focus on local families who are struggling despite being employed, and who are neither low income enough for traditional assistance from agencies nor have a support network to help during a crisis. This includes, but will not be limited to, families struggling due to medical bills and emergencies, breadwinner death, job loss, large utility bills, inability to clothe themselves or their children appropriately, flood, tornado, fire, difficulty finding affordable housing, or disability. We will begin the post-Katrina assistance in the Wake County area of North Carolina, with a long-term goal of serving people nationwide.
How can I help?
Current Drives
The Brandon Noble Fund. Project Safety Net is currently accepting donations to assist a family in Durham with a critically ill and developmentally challenged 5 year old son named Brandon. We can come together as a community and ensure that this family does not go through this alone!
Bingo for Brandon Drive. We are actively seeking tax deductible donations to assist the Noble family in acquiring a trained Autism/Seizure dog to dramatically improve the quality of life for the entire family. This longed for companion, already dubbed "Bingo" by Brandon, is quite expensive. Please join us in our Penny Harvest this fall to raise the $16,000 needed to cover the costs of training such a special canine.
We are looking for any donation, large or small. Perhaps you can donate the loose change in your pocket without missing it? Do you know some folks that will gladly do the same? If we can harvest enough pennies from enough kind people, Bingo just may be at home with Brandon by Christmas!
Send donations to 305 Webster St in Cary 27511 or stop by Connolly's Irish Pub in Cary at the intersection of Highhouse and Davis Dr and drop your pennies in our collection can. If you see a penny harvest can around town at local businesses in Cary, feel free to dig in your pocket or pocketbook and toss a few cents in. It will add up in no time! As always, all donations are completely tax deductible.
Please visit their website for further information and to offer assistance and donations. PSN will also be glad to accept tax deductible donations for this family. Simply send us a check, made out to Project Safety Net and write "Brandon Noble Fund" on the memo line. You can also make a secure credit card donation and add "For Brandon Noble" as an instruction note. We will immediately issue a tax receipt, so be sure to include your mailing address with correspondence.
