Winning Science Fair Projects

by Reggie Andersen

Science fairs can be very competitive events, especially if there's a cash prize at stake. While not all entrants can be winners, one's chances of crafting winning science fair projects can be increased by following several guidelines.

Have a Sound Experimental Design

Make sure that the fundamental parts of your science fair project are valid. There's nothing quite as painful as seeing an otherwise well-made science fair project being disqualified on a technicality.

What Effort You Put In It Is Important

Judges take into account the effort that you put into your science project. A solid, neatly-made project and display based on an interesting topic is much more likely to win than one that is hastily made... or store-bought.

Topic Selection Is Important

Perhaps nothing in a science fair project is more important than the problem or subject you're going to be investigating in the first place. Preferably it's one that you are naturally interested in so your enthusiasm for the project will be genuine and not forced. Your interest in your topic will keep you motivated even when the going gets tough. Your enthusiasm will also more than likely communicate itself to the judges.

Of course, you have to consider your audience when choosing a topic; you must determine if the topic you want to cover in your science fair project would be interesting to your audience as well. At the very least, evaluate whether you have it in you to make an otherwise uninteresting topic more interesting. Ask your classmates, friends, parents, teachers for their opinion on your topic.

Originality is also essential as original topics are more likely to stand out in a judge's mind than a rehash of some standard science project. Consider what the science fair theme is (if it has one) and what the judges might be looking for. Also, make your science project count by choosing a topic that has useful applications. For example, you could measure the amount of nutrients in your typical school lunch.

Don't fall into the trap of making your premise too difficult just try and impress the judges. A tightly-focused project is more advisable than a broad yet vague one. When your science project topic is specific, you can explore it more thoroughly and you can impress the judges with your mastery.

Plan Ahead

Scheduling things far in advance is the prudent thing to do. This will help you adjust to nasty surprises (your resource person suddenly leaves for an unscheduled lecture, for instance). Moreover, this will also give you the luxury of refining and revising your project as the situation merits.

All Aspects Are Important

Don't concentrate on one part of your project so much that you neglect the others. You may be so concerned with the experiment itself that you don't put care into creating your display. On the other hand, you can make an amazing science project but you won't win if you flunk in the oral presentation.

Solar System Science Fair Projects

Science fair projects are very helpful to motivate the students towards scientific study. It also provides the possibility of observing the real world and related problems in a closer way. It aims to develop curiosity about science and technology. It brings about improvement in the manipulative skills, knowledge, and self-confidence.

Solar system began forming 10 to 12 billion years ago as a swirling gas and dust formed a dense core. To visualize the Solar system, understand the orbital motion of the planets and to locate the actual position of the planets the solar system science fair projects are helpful.

Some simple solar system science fair projects ideas:

- Could the other planets support any life?
- Build a miniature model of the Solar system.
- Can we collect micrometeorites from the outdoor sources?
- What causes the phases of moon and what affects the phases of moon?
- How terrestrial planets are formed?

Some interesting, but more complex, ideas for a solar system science project include things like:

- Are there many other solar systems in the universe? Do they support life?
- To study about the other galaxies and solar system present in this universe this project will be useful. A comparative study of why life is possible on earth and why not life is possible on other planets can be done in detail.
- How are the magnetic fields affected by solar storms? Can we build a homemade magnetometer to measure that?
- The magnetic fields are affected by solar storms and cause small changes in its direction at the surface, which are called "magnetic storms."
- A magnetometer operates like a sensitive compass and senses these slight changes in the magnetic field. A homemade magnetometer can be constructed.
- Can we identify black holes? If the answer is yes, how can it be done? By this project, the mysteries and curiosity about the black holes will take a shape and a clear knowledge about black holes can be gained.

How about looking at making your own comet to know the details about them? This is a good example of the kind of model building science fair projects that you can build, which make a fancy display and encourage more people to ask questions about your project.

- A large comet is a spectacular sight and is a star like celestial body, which has a tail and still people have lots of doubts about it. To know better, this project will help out.
- How to locate the position of a celestial body by a sidereal pointer?
- Sidereal pointer is an instrument that helps you to locate each celestial body in the night sky. How to construct a sidereal pointer easily can be discussed in this project in detail.

Solar system science projects are fairly demanding projects that represent a challenge to your student, mostly because it is so difficult to build an actual experiment. The majority of the time, these projects are more based on research or model building, which are both valid, but often are much more difficult than a simple presentation of results.

Each of the projects develop cognitive skills and help the students to leap forward. However, a good solar system science fair project shows a lot of ingenuity and can really impress the judges with a creative and unique approach. If you want to win a science fair or if you need the good grade in science class, then a solar system science fair project is a great option.

Electricity Science Fair Projects

An electricity science fair project may be set up as a part of high school or college science fair or just for fun and learning. An electricity science fair project is aimed at demonstrating the major methods of generating electricity, its principles, applications and other principles such as chemical energy, electromagnetism, static electricity, resistance, etc.

For organizing an electricity science fair project, the students need three things:

1. They should have extensive theoretic knowledge of the projects they are going to build. For this purpose, they may have to consult books and encyclopedias.

2. They need the guidance and assistance of their science teachers or perhaps of external knowledgeable advisors.

3. They need certain materials like convex mirrors, reflectors, concave mirrors, insulators, conductors, light bulbs, fuses, wires, on-off switches, step-down transformers, holders, mazes, circuits, electromagnets, and many more. The pieces that they need for these types of experiments are sometimes hard to come by.

Nowadays, unlike years earlier, commercial ready-made kits are available that make the setting up of electricity science fair project easy. Though they cannot be used directly as project models, they can be used in specific electricity science fair projects. One can get basic or advanced kits for the projects, but remember, if it was available to you, it might be available to someone else. Duplicate experiments are not good for judges to see.

Some of the examples of electricity science fair projects are listed below, but are not limited to the following ones:

* Demonstrating the effects of electric fields on plants
* Carrying out experimental exploration of the photoelectric effect
* Carrying out experiments with electron diffraction
* Building models of a simple electrostatic motor, a wooden generator, a Van de Graaf generator, a wind generator, a water turbine generator, and demonstrating their operations
* Performing Faraday's "Ice Pail" experiment and explaining the mechanism of electrostatic induction
* Building an electroscope and demonstrating the existence of positive and negative charges and of two kinds of materials: the insulators and the conductors
* Demonstrating how lightning is produced
* Demonstrating how light is faster than sound
* Demonstrating the role of electricity in separating a mixture of salt, sugar and pepper
* Demonstrating static electricity with the help of the jumping effect on rice flakes kept on a tabletop
* Building a working model of an electric cycle, electric tricycle and an electric car and demonstrating the involved principles
* Demonstrating the way a hydroelectric plant generates electricity with the help of water.

None of the above-mentioned electricity science fair projects need expensive or rare materials, but instead, they simply require the relatively easily available ones. Moreover, any high school student can do most of these projects under the supervision of an elder, be it parent or a teacher.

Electricity science fair projects remind us of the fact that electricity is indispensable to mankind, and can provide a good segway for the student into a high paying career in the field of electronics or electricity.

Jordan Matthews is a High School Math and Science teacher who has worked as a judge and a coordinator of many science fairs. Check his Science Fair Project ideas website for some more ideas and information about science fair projects involving electricity and other styles of projects.
