Creating a Great Portfolio
Things to keep in mind so that you look your best in your pictures.
Quality photographs are crucial for any model. They are your first impression on clients and future employers, and can determine how much work you receive as a model. Be sure to find a professional photographer that you trust, and discuss the goals of your shoot before you begin.Your photos say a lot about you. They give clients insight into your personality, style, and professionalism, so be sure the photos you choose accurately reflect who you are. Do not submit photos that are poorly exposed, out of focus, un-cropped, or out of date. Choose photos that accentuate your best features, and show your face and body clearly.
Clients are often looking for a very specific look. In order to grab their attention, it is important to have variety of looks in your photos. Work with a photographer that understands this, and is willing to experiment with different poses, lighting, angles, and locations. Remember, your photos are your selling point, and the first step towards building a profitable career.
Modeling Glossary
- Artistic Nudity:

A type of nudity for photographs, which is revealing, yet meant to be tasteful rather than exotic or pornographic. It is used mostly for artistic photographs shown in galleries. - Beauty Shot:

Very similar to a head shot, in that it is a photo taken from the shoulders up that showcases a models face in close proximity. Beauty shots are generally more simplified than headshots, and involve less makeup, simple hair, and little jewelry. - Commercial Modeling:
Modeling for the purpose of selling a product, which is most often used in print or television advertising. Products can include food, beverages, household products, appliances, hair products, etc. There are far fewer requirements and physical restrictions for commercial models than for fashion or glamour models. - Composite Card:
Also known as a Comp Card, this is a card which contains several photos of a model, as well their height, weight, hair color, eye color, size and contact information. This is valuable promotional tool for models because it is sent to potential clients. - Fashion Modeling:

A type of modeling in which the clothing or accessories are the focus of the photos or event. The purpose is to sell clothes, and can include runway, fashion magazine, and certain catalog work. There are many physical restrictions for this type of modeling, including height, which must be above 5'9 for a woman and above 6'0 for a man. - Headshot:

An 8x10 photograph of a model's head and shoulders. Headshots are a very important tool for any model because they allow clients to see a model's facial features up close. - Implied Nudity:

Either full or partial nudity which is meant to be suggestive, and generally does not completely expose the model's body. - Promotional model:
Any model hired to increase visibility or generate interest in a product or service. Promotional models often work at conventions and trade shows. - Spokesmodel:
A model that promotes a specific product at a tradeshow, convention or other promotional event. a spokesmodel is seen as a representative for the brand, and is often asked to demonstrate or speak publicly about the brand.

Promotional Modeling Practices
Suggestions and Tips to help you have the most positive experience possible.
Modeling is a fun and often financially rewarding career, but it is also hard work and should be taken seriously. Professionalism is imperative for success in the industry, and it begins with punctuality. If you want to earn a good reputation, you should always arrive on time and be prepared to work. It seems simple, but it can make or break a model. To avoid tardiness, make sure that you know the exact location of your assignment, and keep in contact with your project manager.Maintaining a healthy and presentable appearance is necessary for all models. For assignments, this includes keeping hair clean and styled, nails well manicured, and makeup well applied. Be sure to show up for work well-rested, because days can be long and may require you to be on your feet for an extended period of time. Because modeling involves a constant change of work environments, it is also important to stay organized and keep a detailed schedule of times and locations where you are required to be.
Promotional models are hired by a client to help promote their product or services. Therefore, it is the models' responsibility to educated themselves about the brand and products they are promoting by reading and memorized the information provided. If a uniform or specific clothing is required, make sure you have everything necessary and it fits correctly. These are details that should be worked out well before the day of the promotion.
Because you are being paid to represent a brand, you should be friendly, confidant, and show an interest in the product or service you are promoting. While you are working, it is important to smile and try to speak with as many people as possible. The more effort you put into preparing for a job, the more it will pay off in the end. Models that show up for work awake, looking their best, and exited to work receive positive referrals and will have more rewarding careers in the industry. Remember, just as a good performance can lead to more jobs, a poor showing can give you a bad reputation, and hurt your chances of earning future work.

The Brutal Truth About the High Fashion Industry
Unfortunately, the fashion modeling industry has VERY strict height and body requirements. The average heights for women range between 5'8" and 6'0" with most falling between 5'9" and 5'11". Men should range around 6'0" and 6'2". In fact, the top New York Agencies (Elite Models, Supreme Models, Major Model Management, and New York Model Management) all require a height minimum of 5'9" for women and 6'0" for men.
In addition to the height requirements, a female's body must be very lean, yet toned with weight between 100-125 pounds. Hips shouldn't be any bigger than 35 inches and while bust size isn't as important, a smaller bust is usually preferred because the clothes tend to hang better. Finally, age is also important with most agencies requiring aspiring models to be between 15 and 20.
The reason for such stringent size demands is primarily because designers and photographers prefer tall and lean models. Top designers send one sample size of their new line (usually a 4 or 6 and cut for a tall model) because other sizes haven't been manufactured yet. The models need to be able to fit into the clothes whether it's for the runway or editorial work and it's much easier to hire a model that already fits the clothes than to always have to alter clothes so a shorter model can wear them. While it is rare that agencies take high fashion models under 5'8", don't be completely discouraged . . . Kate Moss is only 5'7"! Just keep in mind that the competition will be much stiffer than it already is. Also, try looking into the many other fields of modeling that are just as fun and fulfilling as the fashion industry. The height and body requirements are much more lenient for modeling areas such as catalog and commercial print, as well as other fun areas of modeling such as promotions and tradeshows.
