How Do You Proofread Website Content That You've Written?

Self-editing can be extremely difficult. You are so close to the words on the page that you usually can't see the errors. Most of us can't afford a personal proofreader for our website content, but you don't have to publish your content with errors your readers will notice. There are tips you can learn to help you improve your proofreading and self-editing skills.

Tips for Self-Editing and Proofreading Website Content You've Written

Here are a few tips to self-edit your website content.

Step away from your writing at least overnight. The closer it's been since you wrote that article or blog post, the harder it will be to spot your errors. Letting it sit for several hours will help you have fresh eyes to proofread and edit.

Don't rely strictly on spelling and grammar check programs. You still should use these programs. They will catch the obvious errors and typos. However, they can't catch poor quality writing that you would want to self-edit. They also will miss errors where you have used the wrong word entirely. A really common typo like this is using "you" when you meant "your."

Slow down and look at each word, not the sentence. This one takes practice. Don't look at the whole sentence, read word by word. We are so used to reading quickly and moving our eyes across the page as fast as we can without losing comprehensive, that our mind will often fill in words that might be missing. This is especially true with self-editing. You know what the sentence is supposed to say. You wrote it.

Read your content outloud. This works particularly well if you have someone that can listen to you read it. Even if you can't, speaking the words aloud automatically makes you slow down and look at each word. It also helps you catch wording that sounds awkward or unclear.

Print it out. Proofreading on a computer screen is especially difficult. Printing out your text makes it easier to spot errors. It also gives you a way to track your edits from draft to draft.

"This book changed my entire outlook on writing. I am only up to page 26 and already I have hacked through some articles like a whipper-snipper through a weeded garden. I found some habitual mistakes I constantly make and curbed some emerging ones. This is a fantastic book!"

How to Find Someone Else to Proofread Website Content for You

Still don't think you can proofread your own work? You have a few options to find someone else to proofread your work

1. Hire a professional proofreader- look on sites like elance.com for a proofreader for hire. You could also advertise for a proofreader on Craigs List.

2. Hire a student- if you live near a college or university, place an ad on their job boards or campus newspaper for an English or Journalism student that might be interested in a proofreading job.

3. Participate in forums- ask who other website or blog owners are using for proofreading. Getting a recommendation from someone is often better than just trying your luck at freelancing sites.

4. Enlist a friend or family member- You might just be lucky enough to have a friend or someone in the family who has good editing and proofreading skills.

5. Offer your customers a chance to give feedback- this works particularly well with a new product or ebook you are about to launch. Email your previous customers asking if 5 of them will volunteer to proofread your ebook and give you feedback in exchange for a free copy of the product. Remember to give them a deadline to complete the feedback. You might just find a reliable proofreader for your next proofreading job.
