Propane Stoves

Propane stoves are essential for camping trips and rural living
A propane stove is what I use for camp cooking and backpacking, but also is helpful when my cabin's larger propane tank suddenly empties. If that happens, I get my propane burner, fire it up, and keep on cooking!
I consider propane stoves an essential for cabin living, but when I backpacked a lot, I always had a tiny propane stove to carry with me. This page features both types of propane stoves and propane burners, and even shows a few propane stoves somewhat larger, for those who go camping with a car.
Propane - what is it?
...with a word about propane history.
Propane is a liquefied petroleum gas and serves about 4% of total energy needs in my country, the USA. It is colorless and odorless, so an identifying odor is added so it can be detected, for the sake of propane safety. Inside the tank it is both liquid and gas vapor. The vapor is released for use, but the liquid is more compact and best for storage and transportation.
Propane use is allowed by the 1990 Clean Air Act and the National Energy Policy Act of 1992.
Inside homes, propane is used for heating and cooling, hot water, cooking, refrigeration, clothes dryers, barbecues, lights, and gas fireplaces. It is also used by RV owners and campers for propane stoves and gas grills, lights, RV appliances, and generators.
The discovery of propane came in 1910 when a chemist, Dr. Walter Snelling, built a still to separate gaseous emissions from gasoline at the request of a motor car owner. Evaporation included propane, butane, and other hydrocarbons. Propane was immediately valued as a new energy source and by 1912 the first propane stoves were installed in kitchens.

Coleman PefectFlow 1-Burner Stove
Amazon Price: $24.00 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
An awesome, easy to use propane burner sits on top of a propane canister. I find this so easy to use. It is a little tall to put under my cupboards so I need to set it out on an open counter-top - but it will hold just about anything, even my dutch oven! I find it so convenient to pull out this one burner propane stove and light it up when our household propane runs out. Believe it or not, I live in the remote boonies and don't have a large propane tank (used to but got tired of the extremely high bills) so we have a five gallon propane tank connected to the house - and it does run out a couple times a month - so I get a lot of use out of this little propane stove and am very grateful that we have it.
