Proper Care For Patients With Partial Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury is caused by severe pressure or trauma on the spinal cord that resulted to its damage partially if patient have some sensory and motor functions remains below the site of injury. While the damaged is complete when it totally losses motor and sensory function. However, this article focuses on partial spinal cord injury patients.

This problem is commonly occurs on people who belongs in 16 - 30 years old due to various of reasons. However in this age, motor vehicular accidents is "usual", hence became a predisposing factor on acquiring spinal cord injury. Patients who are dealing with spinal cord injury is suffering from its complication like spinal shock wherein the affected person has decreased reflexes.

With this, they have difficulties in controlling also with their urination. If we had a family member who suffers from this illness, how can we help them especially during their hygienic care? In order for us to aid them, we must be first knowledgeable on their condition as well as complication that may be happened when incompetent care have been given.

1. First we must learn how to assess some life threatening manifestation so proper intervention will be given. A person with paraplegia has loss sensory and motor function of lower extremities. This is the reason why they are prone to complications related to immobility and one of these is pressure ulcers. We can prevent it by turning our client's body every 2 hours. Moreover, ensure that the skin of affected area is dry and free of any moist that can be a medium for bacterial growth. We must also prevent putting friction to patients body against bed sheet. That's why when changing linens, ensure that there are no crumpled areas.

2. Patients with partial spinal cord injury tend to do their hygienic care as much as possible to enhance their self esteem. That's why we need to support them during the process of bathing. Try to provide bathroom vanity cabinets on where personal belongings of client may be stored. Using modern bathroom vanities, it can really conserve client's energy in searching for their misplaced equipment.

3. Patient who suffers from spinal cord injury may possibly experienced depression. This phenomenon may caused them to have decreased appetite, hence body will suffer from weight loss. To aid them, we need to divert their attention from the thought of having disabilities. If possible, schedule their activities that may enhance their self esteem. Set a kind of task where they can "win" it. In regards with their appetite, give them foods which is well balanced to meet their physical demands. Present their food in an attractive way so it will enhance their appetite. If you may, also give them food according to their preferences.

4. Last and foremost, educate patients' family that their support is necessary for client's recovery from this disability physically and emotionally. One of our goal is to endure that they achieved optimum level of functioning.

Having a spinal cord injury is really difficult to accept by some patients. This is the reason why we need to support them emotionally and physically.
