Pictures without frames. How sad.
Picture frames in victorian and georgian fashions are usually spoken of as "antique style" even when new. Original antique picture frames aren't the most affordable accessories and so, many reproductions and replicas are available to us. Made of wood or metal, these reproductions appear like genuine pieces and suit a lower budget. A point of notice: improper use or placement of an antique frame can spoil the style of a room. One can be an art nerd, but if frames just do not go with modern fittings then the whole purpose of antique frame is lost. There's no reason to distract the eye from the painting which is as important as the frame.
The earliest recorded picture frame was dated to the middle ages, a time where artists would usually make their own frames. It was during the Renaissance that frame making gained prominence. Pro frame makers came into the forefront and Antique Picture Frames reflected the furniture style of the time, from ornate to gilded or rococo. Usually in wood or metal, an antique picture frame adds a sense of voyeur to the image contained and the room surrounding it.
Picture frames are used most often to protect pictures and draw your eye to them. In modern times we have production lines making acrylic & metal frames in batches, greatly contrasting the classic hand-carved wooden style. The idea of framing dates right back to the 2nd century B.C. as borders to cave paintings. Frames were usually used to isolate and safeguard particular paintings.
