Do Recent Earthquakes Tell Us We're in the Last Days?

Last year was a busy one for earthquakes, and this year has already started off as a big year. The Bible speaks of earthquakes as being one of the signs of the last days. Are we in the Last Days? Is the book of Revelation tell of events that will happen in the near future? While there have always been plenty of earthquakes, I believe that we are in the last days, and the frequency of earthquakes this year can tell you something.

Signs of the Times

"For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places."

~ Matthew 24:7

What's a Normal Earthquake Year?

To be fair, you will see several large earthquakes every year. So to see whether we are having a lot of earthquakes or not, we have to compare it to a normal earthquake year. I am only going to count earthquakes with the magnitude of 6 or above. One could argue that we're having more small earthquakes because detection equipment is better.

Average 8 and above - 1 per year
Average 7 to 7.9 - 15 per year
Average 6 to 6.9 - 134 per year

Big Earthquakes are Up!

Today, I just happened to be looking up the dates of the top 10 largest earthquakes in the world since 1900. I noticed that four of them have occurred since 2004. While some scientists are trying to make you believe that the number of earthquakes is the same, my evidence of big earthquakes shows otherwise. Then, if you take into consideration that out of the top 10 largest earthquakes in the last 110 years, 40% of them have occurred in the past 7 years, I think that's pretty significant. You can't just say that we're recording more earthquakes, since I'm only talking about the biggest quakes on the planet.

There have been 8s on the Richter scale throughout time, but these "super-quakes", the top 10 in the last 110 years, are all 8.7 or larger. Many of the 8s that we experience are 8.5 or lower, and that's only at an average of 1 per year.

How Many Earthquakes in 2011?

As of October 23, 2011, these are the number of earthquakes that we have had:

Magnitude 8+ - 1
Magnitude 7 to 7.9 - 17
Magnitude 6 to 6.9 - 164
If we were continue to have the same frequency of earthquakes for the remainder of 2011, we would have earthquakes of:

Magnitude 8 - 1
Magnitude 7 to 7.9 - 21
Magnitude 6 to 6.9 - 202

This is above average in all categories. I also did the calculation for magnitude 5 to 5.9 earthquakes; it is already more than 50% above the yearly average.

(Calculations were based on the fact that we are 97/365ths of the way through the year as of this day. Earthquakes * (365/296) = Year's Earthquake trend.)

Earthquake Deaths in 2011

The US Geological Survey estimates 28,558 deaths from earthquakes so far this year. Prior to the Japanese quake in March, that number was a lot lower than normal. As a result of the Japanese 9.0 quake, we are fairly close to the average number of quake deaths in a year, and it's only April.

Because of the nuclear problem in Japan, the death toll could go higher just from the Japanese quake. The average number of deaths per year from earthquakes is 30,824.

I think that the great earthquakes, in context with all the other current end times signs, are the ones that the Bible talks about in prophecy. Thanks for posting the info!

You should add a poll. Then we can give our opinion on prophecy. Thanks for the lens.

I live in an area that is high risk for earthquakes, so this is a subject of interest to me. However, I don't worry about it, since we know God us ultimately in control. An interesting subject though, and I didn't realize how many people have died from them so far this year.

Interesting - I was under the impression that we're having more earthquakes than usual. But your data suggest that we always (at least for the time period you have data from) have a lot of earthquakes. I mean, 150 (over 6.0) is a lot of earthquakes! Now I'm not sure what to make of the earthquakes and the Last Days, based on your data.
