The Great Prosser Balloon Rally

"The Great Prosser Balloon Rally The last of the top events. Hot air balloons are scheduled to launch just after dawn from the Prosser airport. Balloons glow from within at Art Fiker Stadium during The Great Prosser Balloon Rally Night Glow show." ~ Wikipedia, Prosser Washington.

Ballooning in Prosser started 19 years ago when balloon pilot Ted Wirch came to town to give his in-laws a balloon ride. During Ted's flight over Prosser he realized just what a beautiful place Prosser really is. He decided there and then that he had to tell other balloonist about the great flying there was to be had in the skies over Prosser. ~ Prosser Balloon Rally's Website

The Hot Air Balloon

The hot air balloon is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology, dating back to its invention by the Montgolfier brothers in Annonay, France in 1783. The first flight carrying humans was made on November 21, 1783, in Paris by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes. Hot air balloons that can be propelled through the air rather than just being carried along by the wind are known as airships or, more specifically, thermal airships.

A hot air balloon consists of a bag called the envelope that is capable of containing hot air. Suspended beneath is the gondola or wicker basket (in some long-distance or high-altitude balloons, a capsule) which carries a source of heat capable of producing a sufficient temperature gradient between the air inside the envelope and the surrounding air mass to give enough lift to keep the balloon and its passengers aloft. Unlike gas balloons, the envelope does not have to be sealed at the bottom since the rising hot air only exerts pressure on the upper hemisphere of the balloon to provide lift. In today's sports balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric and the mouth of the balloon (closest to the burner flame) is made from fire resistant material such as Nomex. Recently, balloon envelopes have been made in fantastic shapes, such as hot dogs, rocket ships, and the shapes of commercial products. See Wikipedia, Hot Air Balloons.

Just two days ago our own balloon festival, The Great Reno Balloon Race, ended (until next year). I was so sad that it was over. I really wish I could go to Prosser, Washington next week and watch the balloons there.

I'm addicted! I've been ballooning since my Mother started hauling me to festivals in footy pjs. That was over 20 years ago now. I've lost count of the number of times of been up. Even though I've moved from state to state I've managed to find a festival in each of WA, OR, UT and CO. There are many out there but Prosser is one of the best.

I've only been in a balloon once, it took forever to wait for a day with the right conditions - we don't get very many in the UK!

I'm a private pilot in the UK and have created a Flying and Aviation group to collate all the quality Squidoo lenses on this subject. Why don't you come and join us at http://www.squidoo.com/groups/flying
