Hormone Therapy For Prostate Cancer

Hormone therapy is one of the methods to treat prostate cancer. The objective of this therapy is to minimize the output of the hormone testosterone which is responsible for triggering cancerous cells.

The cancer gets worse if the cancerous prostatic cells are not treated. These affected cells respond to testosterone in a way that encourages them to spread rapidly to other parts of the body.

The hormone treatment suffocates the cancerous cells by not allowing them to feed on testosterone. One common hormone treatment for prostate cancer is removal of the testes through surgery. This is known as orchiectomy or castration. Testes produces testosterone. So, by removing the testes, the cancerous cells can no longer thrive.

Another form of hormone treatment is through the use of medication. When using medication, it is very likely the patient will be administered an anti-androgenic drug to stop the effects of testosterone on the prostate. In some cases, LH-RH agonists are used to block the discharge of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) signal from the brain. LH-RH signals the testes to produce more testosterone. Blocking of LH-RH reduces the production of testosterone.

You will experience some side effects from hormonal treatment. They can be either permanent or temporary. Accompanying side effects are loss of sexual drive, weight gain, impotence, and infertility.

You can prevent prostate cancer if you change your diet. You can skip hormone therapy if your prostate is well maintained. You can eat certain food for good prostate health. Vegetables especially broccoli, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, and spinach and fruits such as watermelon and pink grapefruit should be included in your daily diet.
