Have you even been woken up at night by a noise in your house? Did your mind immediately wander to the idea that someone might be breaking in? Well I know that feeling all too well because it has happened to me more than a few times. Then one night while I was laying there I heard a crash downstairs and my dog began frantically barking and I could hear someone walking around downstairs. Let me tell you, that is one of the worst feelings you can get in the pit of your stomach. I immediately rolled over, picked up the phone and called the police. I then reached under my night stand and quietly slid out my hand gun case.Without missing a beat I slid in the clip and silently went for the stairs. The plan to go silently went out the window when I began down my 100 year old stairs. As soon as I hit the first step they let out a very creepy creaking sound. Just then I heard rapid movement in the dining room down stairs. Followed by the sound of boots on broken glass followed by and early silence. I continued down the stairs to find no one there, only the evidence that person left behind. A trail of buddy boot prints lead from the window in the dining room. I considered myself a very lucky man.
That was something that I thought could never happen to me. I live in a somewhat small town in the state of Maine and that sort of stuff doesn't happen too often. I had never before thought about getting a security system in my home because I had the same mindset that many people have. It's what I like to call the "It will never happen to me" mindset. And that is a very dangerous outlook. Granted home invasions may only happen to you once or twice in your life time, if at all, but it is something you will NEVER expect.
So it is important to have a mindset that is proactive in thinking of what could happen and how to prevent it. There are many ways to do this when it comes to you home security. The first thing you should do is go outside your house and walk around it like you are a burglar trying to find a way in. Make sure you REALLY spend some time doing this because the type of people that break into homes tend to be pretty good at it. They're not always very bright but they can sure break into your house pretty easily.
Once you spend some time figuring out where the weakest locations around your house are it time to address those issues. As an example lets say you notice that one of the sides of your house is very dark and easy for someone to hide in. Then you should go out and buy a motion activated light. When you install it have one of the bulbs facing the dark spot and have the other face right at a window that you will be able to see if it is set off.
After you find all the weak spots outside it is time to move inside your home and find some inexpensive solutions to protect the inside. Lets start with the windows because chances are that's where burglars will try first. There are some really easy solutions to keep your windows safe. You could get a magnetic window alarm. These units have a small sensor that goes on the window and if someone tries to pry or open the window it will sound a very loud alarm. They are very effective at scaring away anyone that would try and break in through a window.
Another option to look into is a motion alarm with an autodialer. A lot of people don't know about these but they are super handy. Basically they are a small motion sensor that you place in a location in your home that you want to protect. Then you hook up you phone line into them. Once you have done that you can program in several numbers you would like the unit to call if the alarm is tripped. I recommend programming your number, the police department number and the number of a close friend or relative. You can also record a message that it will play when someone answers, something like "Burglar detected at 111 Main St. please send the police immediately". This very handy if you are going out of town. If someone breaks into your house the alarm will call you and the police so you know there is something wrong.
There are many ways to protect you home without having to spend a ton of money. If you have ever gone out and checked on getting a "high end' security system there is no doubt that you had a bit of sticker shock. They are by no means cheap.
