Orphan Works Act of 2008

Ranked #22,111 in Arts & Design, #528,229 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund

Artists Need to be Pro-Active!

The government is trying to pass legislation that requires all artists to register their creations for a fee. If they are not registered, they would become "Orphaned Works" meaning that they have NO copyright and become public domain - so potentially anyone can sell or distribute the images without the creating artist receiving any monetary remuneration. This effects all of us.

What's Being Done

Illustrators, Photographers, and Designers . . .

. . .have opposed specific aspects of the proposed "Orphaned Works" recommendations, siting that ANY attempt to permit use without consent defeats the protection granted under copy-wright law.

As the orphan works copyright legislation advances through Congress, it has exposed a split among photo associations. With their ranks divided, professional photographers have lost whatever lobbying power they might have had as a unified force.

Thank you for providing information here on this very serious topic. I just joined the Facebook group about it and invited all of my friends to bring awareness to the masses, which is the first step towards taking a real stand. Also, I added the application, My Box, which allows for html formating on your profile page and included a quick blurb with links to both an article explaining the issue in depth and the petition. If each creator does his or her part, we can get a lot done with just a little bit of effort!
